Winery Background and History

Château Citran, one of the oldest estates in the Médoc region, dates back to the 13th century. The Donissan de Citran family managed the estate until 1832. Over the years, Château Citran has changed ownership several times, with each proprietor contributing to its rich history and winemaking tradition. The estate is renowned for producing wines that embody the classic characteristics of the Haut-Médoc appellation.

Producer and Winemaker

Moulins de Citran is the second wine of Château Citran, crafted with the same dedication and expertise as the grand vin. The winemaking team focuses on expressing the unique terroir of the estate, combining traditional methods with modern techniques to produce wines of elegance and balance.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

Château Citran’s vineyards span approximately 100 hectares in the Haut-Médoc appellation. The terroir consists of sandy, gravelly soils that provide excellent drainage, essential for cultivating high-quality grapes. The proximity to the Gironde estuary moderates the climate, offering warm days and cool nights that facilitate even ripening and the development of complex flavors in the grapes.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The vinification process for Moulins de Citran involves fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, ensuring precise management of extraction and flavor development. Following fermentation, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation to enhance its texture and complexity. Aging takes place in French oak barrels, with a portion being new oak, over a period of 12 to 14 months. This regimen imparts subtle oak influences while preserving the wine’s fruit-forward character.

Tasting Notes

The 2015 Moulins de Citran presents a bouquet of red and black fruits, including cherries and blackberries, complemented by hints of cedar and spice. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a balanced acidity. Flavors of ripe plum, cassis, and subtle earthy notes lead to a smooth, lingering finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

This wine pairs well with a variety of dishes, including roasted meats, grilled lamb, and hearty stews. Its balanced profile also complements charcuterie and medium-aged cheeses, enhancing the dining experience with its harmonious flavors.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate the nuances of the 2015 Moulins de Citran, it is recommended to serve the wine at a temperature between 16-18°C (60-64°F). Decanting for about 30 minutes before serving can help open up the aromas and flavors, providing a more expressive tasting experience.

Storage and Aging Potential

The 2015 vintage of Moulins de Citran is suitable for both immediate consumption and short-term aging. When stored in optimal conditions—cool, dark, and with stable humidity—the wine can develop additional complexity over the next 5-7 years, reaching its peak maturity within this timeframe.

Grape Varietals & Percentage Used

The blend typically consists of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with the exact proportions varying depending on the vintage.

ABV (Alcohol by Volume)

The alcohol content of the 2015 Moulins de Citran is approximately 13.5%.
