Winery Background and History

Nautilus Estate, established in 1985 in Marlborough, New Zealand, is renowned for producing premium wines that reflect the region’s unique terroir. Family-owned and operated, Nautilus focuses on crafting small-parcel wines with an emphasis on quality and sustainability. The winery’s commitment to excellence has earned it a reputation as one of Marlborough’s leading producers, particularly noted for its expressive Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc.

Producer and Winemaker

Nautilus Estate is led by Clive Weston, with winemaking overseen by Chief Winemaker Clive Jones. Jones, who joined Nautilus in 1998, brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of Marlborough’s diverse vineyards. His philosophy centers on minimal intervention, allowing the fruit to express its natural characteristics while showcasing the distinctiveness of each vintage.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The Pinot Noir grapes for the 2017 vintage were sourced from Nautilus’s Clay Hills Vineyard in the Southern Valleys sub-region of Marlborough. This area is characterized by clay-based soils and a cool climate, providing optimal conditions for growing Pinot Noir. The combination of soil composition and microclimate contributes to the wine’s complexity, with vibrant fruit flavors and balanced acidity.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The 2017 Nautilus Marlborough Pinot Noir underwent fermentation with a portion of whole clusters to enhance aromatics and structure. The wine was then aged for 11 months in French oak barriques, adding subtle spice and complexity. This careful vinification process results in a wine that balances fruit purity with nuanced oak influence.

Tasting Notes

This Pinot Noir presents a medium ruby hue with aromas of dark cherry, earthy violets, subtle baking spices, and dried herbs. On the palate, it offers fresh, crunchy dark fruits, dried cranberry, and a touch of orange peel, with medium-plus acidity and medium tannins providing structure and balance. The finish is long and elegant, showcasing the wine’s complexity.

Food & Wine Pairing

The 2017 Nautilus Marlborough Pinot Noir pairs exceptionally well with dishes such as roasted duck breast, grilled salmon, or mushroom risotto. Its balanced acidity and medium body complement the richness of these dishes, while the wine’s earthy and fruity notes enhance their flavors.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its aromas and flavors, serve this Pinot Noir at a temperature of 15-18°C (59-64°F). Decanting for 30 minutes prior to serving can help the wine open up, revealing its full complexity.

Storage and Aging Potential

This wine has the potential to age gracefully for 5-7 years from its vintage date. Proper storage in a cool, dark environment with consistent temperature will allow it to develop additional complexity over time.
