Winery Background and History

Founded in 1859 by Antoine Ogier in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Maison Ogier has established itself as a distinguished producer in the Rhône Valley. With over 160 years of history, the winery is renowned for crafting wines that authentically express the diverse terroirs of the region. Ogier is committed to sustainable viticulture and meticulous vineyard management, ensuring each wine reflects the unique characteristics of its origin.

Producer and Winemaker

Maison Ogier’s winemaking team combines traditional techniques with modern innovations to create wines that are both expressive and balanced. Their philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the natural qualities of the grapes and terroir to shine through. This approach results in wines that are true representations of the Rhône Valley’s rich viticultural heritage.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The vineyards for La Serine are situated on the steep, vertical hillsides of the Côte-Rôtie appellation, located on the right bank of the Rhône River. These south-facing parcels benefit from excellent sunshine levels and the cooling effects of the northerly winds, creating an optimal environment for grape cultivation. The terroir consists of granite soils, providing excellent drainage and contributing to the wine’s complexity and depth.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Due to the challenging terrain, all vineyard work, including tillage, cultivation, and harvesting, is performed manually. The Syrah grapes are supported by stakes to facilitate cultivation on the steep slopes. The grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve their aromatic potential. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to maintain freshness and varietal character. The wine is then aged in a combination of large oak barrels and stainless steel tanks, enhancing its structure and complexity without overpowering the fruit flavors.

Tasting Notes

La Serine 2023 exhibits a deep red hue with aromas of ripe red fruits, spice, thyme, and laurel, evolving into menthol and pepper on the finish. On the palate, it offers a harmonious balance of fruit intensity, acidity, and well-integrated tannins, leading to a long and elegant finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

This wine pairs excellently with grilled meats, roasted game, and hearty stews. Its robust structure and complex flavor profile complement dishes such as lamb chops, venison, and beef bourguignon, enhancing the overall dining experience.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its aromatic profile and texture, serve La Serine 2023 at a temperature of 16–18°C (61–64°F). Decanting for about an hour before serving is recommended to allow the wine to open up and reveal its full complexity.

Storage and Aging Potential

La Serine 2023 has a cellaring potential of 5–10 years. Proper storage in a cool, dark environment will allow the wine to develop additional complexity and nuance over time.

Grape Varietals & Percentage Used
