Winery Background and History

Opawa Wines, located in Marlborough, New Zealand, is dedicated to producing wines that authentically represent the region’s distinctive terroir. The winery emphasizes sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention winemaking techniques to craft wines that highlight the purity and vibrancy of the fruit. Opawa’s commitment to quality has positioned it as a notable producer within the Marlborough wine community.

Producer and Winemaker

The winemaking team at Opawa, led by Clive Jones, focuses on creating wines that balance traditional methods with modern innovation. Their philosophy centers on expressing the unique characteristics of Marlborough’s terroir through careful vineyard management and precise vinification processes.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The grapes for the 2021 Opawa Pinot Noir are sourced from select premium vineyards in Marlborough. This region benefits from a cool climate with significant diurnal temperature variations, which contribute to the development of complex flavors and balanced acidity in the grapes. The diverse soil types, including well-draining alluvial gravels, enhance the mineral qualities of the wine.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The 2021 Pinot Noir was crafted in Opawa’s dedicated Pinot Noir cellar, utilizing principles of minimal handling and gravity flow. The winemaking process included a cold soak and indigenous fermentation, followed by pressing into French oak barriques for maturation. This approach preserves the delicate aromatics and enhances the wine’s texture and complexity.

Tasting Notes

The nose exhibits attractive notes of ripe plums and wild strawberries, complemented by hints of cloves and spice. On the palate, this medium-bodied wine presents supple red fruit flavors and soft, fine tannins. It boasts an elegant structure, silky texture, and juicy acidity, culminating in a lingering finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Pinot Noir pairs well with a variety of dishes, including roasted duck, grilled salmon, and mushroom risotto. Its balanced acidity and supple tannins complement both red and white meats, as well as vegetarian dishes featuring earthy flavors.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its aromatic profile and texture, serve the 2021 Opawa Pinot Noir at a temperature of 14–16°C (57–61°F). Decanting is not necessary, but allowing the wine to breathe for 15–30 minutes before serving can enhance its flavors.

Storage and Aging Potential

This Pinot Noir is designed for immediate enjoyment but can also benefit from short-term cellaring. When stored in optimal conditions—a cool, dark place with stable humidity—it can develop additional complexity over the next 3–5 years.
