Bodega Otronia is situated in the heart of Patagonia, Argentina, at latitude 45°33’, making it one of the southernmost vineyards in the world. Established with the vision of pushing the boundaries of viticulture, the winery is located near Lake Musters, historically known as Otrón, from which it derives its name. The estate encompasses 50 hectares of organic vineyards planted in 2010, featuring varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Torrontés, Riesling, Merlot, and Malbec. The extreme conditions of the Patagonian steppe, characterized by constant winds, dry climate, and cold temperatures, contribute to the unique expression of their wines. Otronia’s commitment to organic farming and minimal intervention winemaking reflects their dedication to preserving the purity and authenticity of their terroir.
Producer and Winemaker
The winemaking team at Otronia is led by Juan Pablo Murgia, who has been instrumental in crafting wines that capture the essence of Patagonia’s extreme terroir. His approach emphasizes organic viticulture and minimal intervention, allowing the unique characteristics of the region to shine through in each bottle. Murgia’s dedication to quality and innovation has positioned Otronia as a pioneer in Patagonian winemaking.
Vineyards and Microclimate
Otronia’s vineyards are located in Sarmiento, Chubut, at an altitude of 258 meters above sea level. The soils are diverse, comprising lacustrine origins with clays, fluvial and alluvial rocks, and aeolian sands. This heterogeneity necessitated dividing the estate into 45 distinct blocks to manage the unique characteristics of each parcel. The region experiences a continental cold climate with significant diurnal temperature variations, which contribute to the development of natural acidity and aromatic intensity in the grapes. The persistent Patagonian winds and low humidity levels create conditions that are conducive to organic viticulture, as the dry environment minimizes disease pressure. These extreme conditions result in wines with remarkable freshness, purity, and a distinct sense of place.
Grape Varietals & Percentage Used
The 2019 Corte de Blancas is a blend of:
• Chardonnay: 35%
• Gewürztraminer: 30%
• Pinot Gris: 20%
• Riesling: 15%
Vinification & Aging Methods
The grapes for this blend were hand-harvested in the early morning hours to preserve their freshness. They were directly pressed using a pneumatic press without destemming and at low pressure, separating the free-run juice from the press fraction. After static settling, each varietal component fermented separately in stainless steel tanks and concrete eggs, utilizing indigenous yeasts to foster a natural expression of the terroir. Following fermentation, the blend was assembled and aged for 20 to 22 months in unroasted French oak foudres and concrete vats. This aging regimen aimed to enhance the wine’s complexity and texture without imparting overt oak flavors, allowing the purity of the fruit and the distinct characteristics of each varietal to be showcased.

Tasting Notes
The 2019 Corte de Blancas displays a pale yellow hue with clear clarity. The nose is warm and inviting, offering aromas of lemon, ripe pear, and subtle grassy notes. On the palate, the wine is zippy and vibrant, featuring flavors of lemon, pear, and a hint of grassiness. The finish is clean and refreshing, leaving a lasting impression of its crisp acidity and well-integrated flavors.
Food & Wine Pairing
This versatile blend pairs well with a variety of dishes. Its bright acidity and aromatic profile make it an excellent match for seafood, such as grilled fish or shellfish. The wine’s complexity also complements spicy Asian cuisine, where its slight sweetness and spice can balance the heat. Additionally, it pairs nicely with soft cheeses and dishes featuring fresh herbs, enhancing the overall dining experience.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and freshness, serve this wine well-chilled at around 8-10°C (46-50°F) in medium-sized white wine glasses. This temperature accentuates the wine’s vibrant acidity and allows its nuanced aromas to shine. It’s recommended to open the bottle shortly before serving to preserve its delicate aromatics.
Storage and Aging Potential
While the 2019 Corte de Blancas is enjoyable upon release, displaying vibrant fruit flavors and crisp acidity, it also has the potential to develop additional complexity with short-term cellaring. When stored properly in a cool, dark environment with stable temperatures, it can be enjoyed over the next 3 to 5 years, during which it may develop richer textures and more integrated flavors.
