Winery Background and History

Pelissero, a family-owned winery located in the heart of the Langhe region in Piedmont, Italy, has been producing wines for over three generations. Founded by Luigi Pelissero, the estate has grown from a small farm into a renowned producer of high-quality wines. Today, Giorgio Pelissero continues the family tradition, managing approximately 38 hectares of vineyards. The winery is particularly known for its Barbaresco wines, which showcase the unique terroir of the region.

Producer and Winemaker

Giorgio Pelissero, the current owner and winemaker, is dedicated to producing wines that reflect the character of the Langhe region. With a focus on sustainable viticulture and meticulous winemaking practices, Giorgio aims to create wines that balance tradition with innovation, highlighting the nuances of the Nebbiolo grape.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The Pelissero estate’s vineyards are situated in the Barbaresco DOCG zone, characterized by rolling hills and diverse soil compositions, including calcareous clay and sandy soils. This diversity contributes to the complexity of the wines. The region experiences a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters, with the nearby Tanaro River moderating temperatures and reducing the risk of frost. The 2019 growing season featured a warm summer with adequate rainfall, leading to optimal ripening conditions for Nebbiolo grapes.

Grape Varietals

The 2019 Barbaresco Nubiola is crafted from 100% Nebbiolo grapes, the hallmark varietal of the Barbaresco region.

Vinification & Aging Methods

After manual harvesting, the grapes undergo fermentation in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures, with automated punch-downs to ensure gentle extraction of color and tannins. The wine is then aged in a combination of small barriques and large 50-hectoliter oak casks, with the proportion varying depending on the vintage characteristics. This approach aims to enhance the varietal expression of Nebbiolo while imparting subtle oak influences.

ABV (Alcohol by Volume)

Approximately 14%.

Tasting Notes

The 2019 Barbaresco Nubiola displays an intense ruby red color. The nose reveals a complex bouquet of ripe red fruits, such as cherry and plum, interwoven with floral notes of violet and hints of eucalyptus and tobacco. On the palate, it is taut and lightly sinewy, with grainy tannins providing structure. Flavors of cherry, plum, and tobacco persist, leading to a lasting impression of fruit and savoriness.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Barbaresco pairs well with rich dishes such as braised meats, game, and aged cheeses. Traditional Piedmontese cuisine, like truffle-infused pasta or risotto, complements the wine’s complexity and enhances its flavors.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve at approximately 18°C (64°F). Decanting for about an hour before serving is recommended to allow the wine to fully express its aromatic profile and complexity.

Storage and Aging Potential

With proper cellaring, the 2019 Barbaresco Nubiola can develop additional complexity over the next 8-12 years, reaching its peak between 2027 and 2031.
