Winery Background and History: Pelissero is a family-owned winery located in the heart of the Langhe region in Piedmont, Italy. Established in 1960, the estate spans approximately 38 hectares of vineyards, all meticulously managed to produce high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of the area. The Pelissero family has dedicated themselves to traditional winemaking practices while embracing modern techniques to enhance the expression of their wines.
Producer and Winemaker: The winery is currently managed by Giorgio Pelissero, who oversees all aspects of production, from vineyard management to winemaking. Giorgio’s profound understanding of the land and commitment to excellence have propelled Pelissero to international acclaim. His approach combines respect for tradition with innovative practices, ensuring that each wine authentically represents its varietal and origin.
Vineyards and Microclimate: The “Piani” vineyard is situated in a less steep area of the Langhe hills, historically recognized for producing quality Barbera grapes. The soil composition is a medium mixture with a small percentage of clay, similar to bentonite, which imparts a good tannic structure to the grapes. The region’s climate features warm days and cool nights, promoting optimal ripening and balanced acidity in the fruit.
Grape Varietals & Percentage Used: 100% Barbera
Vinification & Aging Methods: After hand-harvesting, the grapes undergo a maceration period of 15 to 20 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Post-fermentation, the wine is aged for approximately 9 months in oak barrels, with 30-40% in new barriques and the remainder in 50-hectoliter barrels. This aging process enhances the wine’s complexity and imparts subtle oak nuances.
ABV (Alcohol by Volume): 14.5%
Tasting Notes: The 2022 “Piani” Barbera d’Alba exhibits a bright and intense ruby red color. The nose reveals delicate aromas of blackberry and plum, transitioning to vinous notes characteristic of Barbera, with a subtle contribution from the oak aging. On the palate, it is full-bodied with silky-textured tannins, harmonious acidity, and a persistent finish that highlights its complexity and balance.
Food & Wine Pairing: This versatile Barbera pairs well with a variety of dishes, including pizza, pasta, casseroles, mild game dishes, offal, vegetable-based meals, and medium-aged cheeses. Its balanced acidity and fruit-forward profile complement both rich and delicate flavors, making it a suitable companion for diverse culinary experiences.
Service Methods and Temperatures: To fully appreciate the nuances of the 2022 “Piani” Barbera d’Alba, it is recommended to serve the wine at a temperature between 16°C and 18°C (60°F to 64°F). Decanting is not necessary; however, allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its aromatic profile. Utilizing medium-sized red wine glasses will help concentrate the aromas and direct the wine to the appropriate areas of the palate.
Storage and Aging Potential: When stored under optimal conditions—away from direct light, at a consistent temperature of 12°C to 15°C (54°F to 59°F), and with controlled humidity—the 2022 “Piani” Barbera d’Alba has the potential to age gracefully for up to 7 years, developing additional complexity and depth over time.
