Winery Background and History: Pelissero is a family-owned winery located in the heart of the Langhe region in Piedmont, Italy. Established in 1960, the estate spans approximately 38 hectares of vineyards, all meticulously managed to produce high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of the area. The Pelissero family has dedicated themselves to traditional winemaking practices while embracing modern techniques to enhance the expression of their wines.
Producer and Winemaker: The winery is currently managed by Giorgio Pelissero, who oversees all aspects of production, from vineyard management to winemaking. Giorgio’s profound understanding of the land and commitment to excellence have propelled Pelissero to international acclaim. His approach combines respect for tradition with innovative practices, ensuring that each wine authentically represents its varietal and origin.
Vineyards and Microclimate: The Nebbiolo grapes for this wine are sourced from vineyards located in the villages of Treiso, Neive, and Barbaresco. These sites feature calcareous clay soils and benefit from a continental climate with significant diurnal temperature variations. Such conditions are ideal for cultivating Nebbiolo, allowing the grapes to develop complexity, balanced acidity, and the tannic structure characteristic of the varietal.
Grape Varietals & Percentage Used: 100% Nebbiolo
Vinification & Aging Methods: The vinification process aims to highlight the freshness and aromatic profile of Nebbiolo. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with maceration periods that are carefully managed to extract optimal color and tannins without overpowering the fruit character. The wine is then aged for approximately 8 to 9 months, with 20-30% in barriques and the remainder in large 50-hectoliter oak barrels. This approach balances the influence of oak, preserving the grape’s inherent qualities.
ABV (Alcohol by Volume): Approximately 14%
Tasting Notes: The 2019 Langhe Nebbiolo presents a clear, bright purple-red hue with lighter tannic nuances at the rim. The nose is persistent and fragrant, dominated by fresh red fruit aromas such as strawberry and raspberry. On the palate, it offers good persistence with a classic light tannic astringency, well-rounded by subtle wood influences and balanced acidity, leading to a pleasant and stimulating finish.
Food & Wine Pairing: This versatile Nebbiolo pairs well with a variety of dishes, including pasta with rich meat sauces, roasted poultry, and medium-aged cheeses. Its balanced acidity and moderate tannins complement both hearty and delicate flavors, making it a suitable companion for diverse culinary experiences.
Service Methods and Temperatures: To fully appreciate the nuances of the 2019 Langhe Nebbiolo, it is recommended to serve the wine at a temperature between 16°C and 18°C (60°F to 64°F). Decanting is not necessary; however, allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its aromatic profile. Utilizing medium-sized red wine glasses will help concentrate the aromas and direct the wine to the appropriate areas of the palate.
Storage and Aging Potential: When stored under optimal conditions—away from direct light, at a consistent temperature of 12°C to 15°C (54°F to 59°F), and with controlled humidity—the 2019 Langhe Nebbiolo can develop additional complexity over the next 5 to 7 years, with tertiary flavors such as dried fruits and subtle earthy notes emerging over time.
