Winery Background and History: Planeta is a family-owned winery in Sicily, Italy, with a winemaking heritage dating back to the 1600s. In the mid-1980s, siblings Alessio, Francesca, and Santi Planeta, under the guidance of their uncle Diego Planeta, revitalized the family’s winemaking tradition. They focused on matching Sicily’s diverse soils with both indigenous and international grape varieties. Today, Planeta encompasses six distinct wine estates across Sicily, including the Sciaranuova estate on Mount Etna, where their Eruzione 1614 Nerello Mascalese is produced.
Producer and Winemaker: The Planeta family oversees all aspects of production, with winemaker Patricia Toth leading the winemaking team. Patricia’s expertise and dedication to quality ensure that each wine reflects the unique characteristics of its terroir.
Vineyards and Microclimate: The Eruzione 1614 Nerello Mascalese is crafted from grapes grown in the Sciaranuova vineyards, located on the northern slopes of Mount Etna at altitudes between 840 and 860 meters above sea level. The soils are rich in minerals, composed of black volcanic sands from historic lava flows, including the notable 1614 eruption. This high-altitude, mineral-rich environment, combined with the Mediterranean climate, contributes to the wine’s distinctive profile.
Grape Varietals & Percentage Used: 100% Nerello Mascalese
Vinification & Aging Methods: The grapes are hand-picked and, if necessary, refrigerated at 10°C upon arrival at the winery. After destemming, fermentation occurs at 25°C in stainless steel vats, with the must remaining on the skins for 21 to 35 days. This is followed by malolactic fermentation in stainless steel and aging in oak barrels for 12 months, allowing the wine to develop complexity while preserving its fresh fruit character.
ABV (Alcohol by Volume): Approximately 13.7%
Tasting Notes: The 2019 Eruzione 1614 Nerello Mascalese exhibits a bright ruby color. Aromas include cherry, strawberry, and mineral notes. On the palate, it offers flavors mirroring the nose, with chewy tannins and a soft spice finish.
Food & Wine Pairing: This versatile wine pairs well with a variety of dishes. Its balanced profile complements pasta with tomato-based sauces, grilled meats, and even certain fish preparations. The wine’s adaptability makes it suitable for both simple and complex dishes, enhancing the dining experience across a range of cuisines.
Service Methods and Temperatures: To fully appreciate the nuances of the 2019 Eruzione 1614 Nerello Mascalese, it is recommended to serve the wine at a temperature between 16°C and 18°C (60°F to 64°F). Decanting is not necessary; however, allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its aromatic profile. Utilizing medium-sized red wine glasses will help concentrate the aromas and direct the wine to the appropriate areas of the palate.
Storage and Aging Potential: When stored under optimal conditions—away from direct light, at a consistent temperature of 12°C to 15°C (54°F to 59°F), and with controlled humidity—the 2019 Eruzione 1614 Nerello Mascalese can be enjoyed young for its fresh and vibrant character or aged for up to 6–7 years, during which it will develop additional complexity and depth.
