Winery Background and History: Planeta is a family-owned winery in Sicily, Italy, with a winemaking heritage dating back to the 1600s. In the mid-1980s, siblings Alessio, Francesca, and Santi Planeta, under the guidance of their uncle Diego Planeta, revitalized the family’s winemaking tradition. They focused on matching Sicily’s diverse soils with both indigenous and international grape varieties. Today, Planeta encompasses six distinct wine estates across Sicily, including the Feudo di Mezzo estate on Mount Etna, where their Etna Rosso DOC is produced.
Producer and Winemaker: The Planeta family oversees all aspects of production, with winemaker Patricia Toth leading the winemaking team. Patricia’s expertise and dedication to quality ensure that each wine reflects the unique characteristics of its terroir.
Vineyards and Microclimate: The Etna Rosso is crafted from grapes grown in the Feudo di Mezzo and Pietramarina vineyards, located in the heart of Etna’s wine region. The vineyards are situated at altitudes ranging from 510 to 610 meters above sea level and are characterized by black lava sands rich in minerals. The unique terroir, influenced by the volcanic soil and Mediterranean climate, contributes to the wine’s distinctive profile.
Grape Varietals & Percentage Used: 100% Nerello Mascalese
Vinification & Aging Methods: The grapes are hand-picked and, if necessary, refrigerated at 10°C upon arrival at the winery. After destemming, fermentation occurs at 23°C in both wooden and stainless steel vats, with the must remaining on the skins for 14 days. The wine is then aged for 6–8 months in a combination of wooden and stainless steel tanks, allowing it to develop complexity while preserving its fresh fruit character.
ABV (Alcohol by Volume): Approximately 13%
Tasting Notes: The 2022 Etna Rosso exhibits aromas of vanilla, sour cherry, wild strawberry, and a clean floral touch. On the palate, it is fleshy and smooth, with expressive fruit flavors complemented by complex notes of undergrowth, myrtle, and oriental spices. The wine also reveals intriguing hints of iron, rhubarb, and black pepper, leading to a substantial yet smooth finish.
Food & Wine Pairing: This versatile wine pairs well with a variety of dishes. Its balanced profile complements pasta with tomato-based sauces, grilled meats, and even certain fish preparations. The wine’s adaptability makes it suitable for both simple and complex dishes, enhancing the dining experience across a range of cuisines.
Service Methods and Temperatures: To fully appreciate the nuances of the 2022 Etna Rosso, it is recommended to serve the wine at a temperature between 16°C and 18°C (60°F to 64°F). Decanting is not necessary; however, allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its aromatic profile. Utilizing medium-sized red wine glasses will help concentrate the aromas and direct the wine to the appropriate areas of the palate.
Storage and Aging Potential: When stored under optimal conditions—away from direct light, at a consistent temperature of 12°C to 15°C (54°F to 59°F), and with controlled humidity—the 2022 Etna Rosso can be enjoyed young for its fresh and vibrant character or aged for up to 6–7 years, during which it will develop additional complexity and depth.
