Winery Background and History

Founded in 1974 by Giuseppe Castiglioni, Querciabella is a renowned winery located in Tuscany’s Chianti Classico region. The estate has been a pioneer in adopting organic practices since 1988 and biodynamic viticulture by 2000, emphasizing sustainability and environmental stewardship. This commitment has positioned Querciabella as a leader in producing wines that authentically express the unique terroir of their vineyards. Camartina, first produced in 1981, is the winery’s flagship Super Tuscan, representing their dedication to excellence and innovation.

Producer and Winemaker

Under the guidance of Sebastiano Cossia Castiglioni, Querciabella continues to uphold its philosophy of minimal intervention and respect for nature. The winemaking team focuses on creating wines that reflect the purity and character of the grape varieties. Their approach combines meticulous vineyard management with precise vinification methods to ensure each bottle embodies the essence of its origin.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The grapes for Camartina are sourced from vineyards located in Ruffoli, on the hillsides of Greve in Chianti. The Cabernet Sauvignon thrives in the Casaocci Sud vineyard, characterized by galestro soils and south-facing exposure, providing optimal conditions for ripening. Another site, Poggerino, with denser clay-rich soils, contributes to the structural backbone of the Cabernet. The Sangiovese is cultivated at elevations ranging from 350 to 600 meters above sea level, with varying orientations and soil compositions, imparting elegance and vitality to the wine.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The 2004 Camartina is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Sangiovese. Fermentation occurred in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, utilizing indigenous yeasts to preserve the grape’s natural character. The wine was then aged for 18 months in fine and extra-fine-grained French oak barriques, with up to 30% being new oak. This aging process imparts subtle oak influences while maintaining the varietal purity and elegance of the blend.

Tasting Notes

The 2004 Camartina exhibits a deep ruby color. The nose is complex and seductive, revealing aromas of ripe blackberries, cherries, violets, and graphite. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with fine tannins, offering flavors of sweet cherry, bramble, espresso, plum, and blackberry. The wine boasts a bold mouthfeel with a long, persistent finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

Camartina’s robust structure and complex flavor profile make it an excellent companion to hearty dishes such as braised meats, roasted red meats, and aged cheeses. Traditional Tuscan dishes like wild boar ragù or bistecca alla fiorentina would complement the wine’s depth and richness. Its versatility also allows it to pair well with dishes featuring earthy flavors like mushrooms and root vegetables.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its aromatic profile and structure, serve the 2004 Camartina at a temperature of 16–18°C (61–64°F). Decanting the wine for about an hour before serving can help open up its complex bouquet and soften the tannins. Use large, tulip-shaped wine glasses to concentrate the aromas and enhance the tasting experience.

Storage and Aging Potential

As of 2025, the 2004 Camartina is at its peak drinking window, offering a harmonious balance of primary fruit flavors and developed tertiary notes. While it may continue to evolve slightly, it is advisable to consume any remaining bottles soon to enjoy the wine at its best. Proper storage in a cool, dark environment with a consistent temperature will help maintain its quality.
