Winery Background and History
Founded in 1974 by Giuseppe Castiglioni, Querciabella is located in Tuscany’s Chianti Classico region. The estate quickly gained recognition for its commitment to quality and innovation, transitioning to organic viticulture in 1988 and adopting biodynamic practices by 2000. This dedication to sustainable agriculture has positioned Querciabella as a leader in producing wines that authentically express their terroir while respecting the environment.
Producer and Winemaker
Querciabella is currently managed by Sebastiano Cossia Castiglioni, who continues his father’s legacy of innovation and sustainability. The winemaking team, led by experienced professionals, emphasizes minimal intervention and a deep respect for the natural characteristics of the grapes. Their approach combines traditional techniques with modern technology to craft wines of exceptional quality and distinctiveness.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The estate’s vineyards are spread across the communes of Greve, Radda, and Gaiole in Chianti. These areas feature diverse soils, including galestro, sandstone, and limestone, contributing to the complexity of the wines. The vineyards’ elevations, ranging from 350 to 600 meters, provide a cooler microclimate that enhances acidity and aromatic development in the grapes, resulting in wines with freshness and depth.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes are meticulously hand-harvested and undergo fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks using indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged for 12 months in fine to extra fine-grained oak barriques and tonneaux, with a small percentage being new oak. This careful aging process enhances the wine’s complexity while preserving the purity of the Sangiovese fruit.
Tasting Notes
The 2020 Querciabella Chianti Classico exhibits a bright ruby-red color. The nose is greeted with aromas of rose hips, cherries, blueberries, lemon leaves, and dried flowers. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with tangy acidity and firm tannins, showcasing vibrant and elegant characteristics with pure fruit expression. The finish is persistent, leaving a pleasant, savory impression.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Chianti Classico’s crisp acidity and balanced structure make it a versatile companion to various dishes. It pairs exceptionally well with traditional Tuscan cuisine, such as pappa al pomodoro, as well as tomato-based pasta dishes, grilled meats, and aged cheeses. Its vibrant fruit profile also complements dishes featuring herbs and roasted vegetables.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its aromatic profile, serve the wine at 16–18°C (61–64°F). Using a medium-sized, tulip-shaped glass will help concentrate the aromas. Decanting is not necessary but can be beneficial if the wine has been cellared for several years to allow it to open up fully.
Storage and Aging Potential
When stored properly in a cool, dark environment with a consistent temperature, this Chianti Classico can age gracefully for 8–10 years. Over time, it will develop more complex tertiary aromas and flavors, rewarding those who choose to cellar it.
