Winery Background and History
Founded in 1974 by Giuseppe Castiglioni, Querciabella is a renowned Tuscan winery celebrated for its commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture. With vineyards in both Chianti Classico and Maremma, the estate has been a pioneer in sustainable winemaking practices. The introduction of Mongrana Bianco in 2020 marked Querciabella’s foray into white wines from Maremma, aiming to capture the region’s coastal freshness and vibrant character.
Producer and Winemaker
Under the leadership of Sebastiano Cossia Castiglioni, Querciabella’s winemaking team emphasizes minimal intervention to preserve the natural expression of the grapes. Collaborating closely with local organic growers, they ensure that each bottle reflects the unique terroir of Maremma. Their approach combines traditional techniques with modern innovation to craft wines of purity and elegance.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The Vermentino and Viognier grapes for Mongrana Bianco are sourced from vineyards situated on gently rolling hills at elevations of 30–50 meters above sea level in Maremma. These vineyards feature iron-rich soils composed of sparse silt and alluvial sand, with areas of gravel and surface pebbles. The coastal proximity imparts a refreshing saline quality to the grapes, while the Mediterranean climate, characterized by warm days and cool nights, enhances their aromatic development and maintains acidity.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Harvested in the morning to preserve their aromatic qualities and natural acidity, the grapes undergo fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel and cement tanks. The wine then matures for approximately five months in these vessels, allowing it to develop complexity while retaining its fresh and vibrant character. No animal products or byproducts are used in the production, making it suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
Tasting Notes
Mongrana Bianco 2022 presents a bright straw-yellow hue with greenish reflections. The nose is greeted with fragrant floral aromatics and stone fruit flavors. On the palate, it is crisp and mineral-driven, with a smooth, waxy texture that rounds out its light and elegant body. The finish lingers with a fresh almond bitterness, characteristic of Maremma whites.
Food & Wine Pairing
This wine’s versatility makes it an excellent companion to a variety of dishes. It pairs wonderfully with appetizers, salty snacks, and pizzas, making it ideal for casual gatherings. Its bright acidity and herbal notes complement spring and summer vegetables like asparagus, peas, and fava beans. Notably, it pairs well with traditionally challenging ingredients such as artichokes. Suggested pairings include vegan pasta al pesto, sunchoke soup, and Thai mango salad.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its aromatic profile and freshness, serve Mongrana Bianco 2022 chilled at a temperature of 7–10°C (44–50°F). Due to its approachable nature, decanting is not necessary. Using medium-sized white wine glasses will enhance the wine’s aromas and flavors.
Storage and Aging Potential
Mongrana Bianco 2022 is crafted for immediate enjoyment, showcasing its vibrant fruit and floral characteristics. While it can be consumed young, it also has the potential to develop additional complexity over the next 2–3 years when stored in a cool, dark place with a consistent temperature.
