Winery Background and History

Founded in 1974 by Giuseppe Castiglioni, Querciabella is a pioneering winery located in Tuscany, Italy. Initially established in the Chianti Classico region, the estate expanded to Maremma in 1997, embracing organic practices in 1988 and biodynamic viticulture by 2000. This commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship has positioned Querciabella as a leader in producing wines that authentically express the unique terroir of their vineyards.

Producer and Winemaker

Under the guidance of Sebastiano Cossia Castiglioni, Querciabella continues its philosophy of minimal intervention and respect for nature. The winemaking team focuses on creating wines that reflect the purity and character of the grape varieties. Their approach combines meticulous vineyard management with precise vinification methods to ensure each bottle embodies the essence of its origin.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The Merlot grapes for Palafreno are sourced from Querciabella’s vineyards in Ruffoli, Greve in Chianti. These high-altitude sites, ranging from 350 to 550 meters above sea level, feature diverse soils such as galestro, sandstone, and limestone. The varying elevations and soil compositions contribute to a unique microclimate that enhances the aromatic complexity and structural balance of the wines, with cool temperatures preserving acidity and promoting slow, even ripening of the grapes.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The 2022 Mongrana is crafted from a blend of Sangiovese, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled stainless steel and cement vats, utilizing indigenous yeasts to maintain the grape’s natural character. The wine is then aged for 10 months in cement vats, preserving the freshness and purity of the fruit while allowing for subtle development of complexity.

Tasting Notes

The 2022 Mongrana presents well-defined aromas of ripe fruit, including morello cherry, blackberry, and blueberry, complemented by complex notes of kirsch, ivy, and pine needles, enriched by a touch of licorice. On the palate, it offers a juicy, fresh sip with soft tannins. The long finale is savory, with a mineral note that persists in the mouth.

Food & Wine Pairing

Mongrana’s versatility makes it an excellent companion to a wide range of dishes. Its vibrant acidity and balanced structure pair well with traditional Italian cuisine, such as pasta with tomato-based sauces, pizza, and grilled meats. The wine’s Mediterranean flavor profile also complements herbs like basil, oregano, and thyme, as well as spicier dishes, making it suitable for various culinary styles.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its aromatic profile and structure, serve the 2022 Mongrana at a temperature of 14–18°C (57–64°F). Using medium-sized, tulip-shaped wine glasses will help concentrate the aromas. Decanting is not necessary but can be beneficial to allow the wine to open up fully before serving.

Storage and Aging Potential

While Mongrana is enjoyable in its youth, it has the potential to develop further complexity with short-term cellaring. When stored in optimal conditions—cool, dark, and with a consistent temperature—the 2022 vintage can age gracefully for up to 10 years from its release date, offering an evolving and rewarding tasting experience for those who choose to cellar it.
