Winery Background and History
Founded in 1974 by Giuseppe Castiglioni, Querciabella is a renowned winery situated in Tuscany, Italy. The estate has been a pioneer in adopting organic practices since 1988 and biodynamic viticulture by 2000, emphasizing sustainability and environmental stewardship. This commitment has positioned Querciabella as a leader in producing wines that authentically express the unique terroir of their vineyards. Turpino, first introduced in 2010, showcases the winery’s dedication to crafting exceptional blends that highlight the potential of Maremma’s coastal vineyards.
Producer and Winemaker
Under the guidance of Sebastiano Cossia Castiglioni, Querciabella continues to uphold its philosophy of minimal intervention and respect for nature. The winemaking team focuses on creating wines that reflect the purity and character of the grape varieties. Their approach combines meticulous vineyard management with precise vinification methods to ensure each bottle embodies the essence of its origin.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The grapes for Turpino are sourced from vineyards located in Alberese, within the Maremma region of Tuscany. Situated at elevations between 20 to 50 meters above sea level, these vineyards benefit from proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Uccellina Natural Park’s highlands. The soils are a mixture of silt and alluvial sand, interspersed with gravel and surface pebbles, providing excellent drainage. This unique microclimate, characterized by coastal breezes and ample sunlight, contributes to the development of grapes with vibrant acidity and concentrated flavors.
Vinification & Aging Methods
The 2020 Turpino is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Syrah, and Merlot. Fermentation occurred in wooden vats, utilizing indigenous yeasts to preserve the grape’s natural character. The wine was then aged for 16 months in French oak barriques, with a portion being new oak. This aging process imparts subtle oak influences while maintaining the varietal purity and elegance of the blend.
Tasting Notes
The 2020 Turpino exhibits a deep, dark ruby color. The nose is captivating, offering aromas of black cherry, tobacco, and ebony, with hints of iodine. On the palate, it is juicy and balanced, featuring fine tannins and a lively acidity. Flavors of ripe cherry, plum, tobacco, and leather are complemented by subtle notes of soil humus, leading to a spicy and persistent finish.
Food & Wine Pairing
Turpino’s rich and savory profile makes it an excellent companion to grilled dishes such as portobello mushrooms with barbecue sauce or vegan burgers with zucchini fries. Its peppery and tobacco notes also pair well with roasted vegetables like eggplants, squash, and turnips. Additionally, dishes featuring earthy ingredients like beets or those seasoned with herbs such as rosemary, lavender, and sage will complement the wine’s complex flavors.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its aromatic profile and structure, serve the 2020 Turpino at a temperature of 15–18°C (59–64°F). Decanting the wine for about an hour before serving can help open up its complex bouquet and soften the tannins. Use large, tulip-shaped wine glasses to concentrate the aromas and enhance the tasting experience.
Storage and Aging Potential
When stored in optimal conditions—cool, dark, and with a consistent temperature—the 2020 Turpino has the potential to age gracefully for over a decade. Over time, the wine will develop more nuanced tertiary aromas and flavors, offering an evolving and rewarding tasting experience for those who choose to cellar it.
