Winery Background and History

Maison Roux Père & Fils, established in 1885 by Louis Roux in the village of Saint-Aubin, is a family-owned estate located in the Côte de Beaune sub-region of Burgundy, France. Over the years, the Roux family has expanded their vineyard holdings to over 70 hectares, encompassing a diverse range of appellations across Burgundy. The estate is renowned for producing high-quality wines that express the unique terroirs of the region, with a commitment to traditional winemaking practices and sustainable viticulture.

Producer and Winemaker

The Roux family remains at the helm of the estate, with members of the fourth and fifth generations actively involved in both vineyard management and winemaking. Their collective experience and deep-rooted passion for viticulture ensure that each wine reflects the family’s commitment to excellence and the distinctive characteristics of their vineyard sites.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The “Albus” cuvée is crafted from Aligoté grapes sourced from vineyards within the Bourgogne Aligoté appellation. The vineyards benefit from a continental climate, characterized by warm summers and cool winters, which is ideal for grape cultivation. The soils are predominantly limestone and clay, contributing to the wines’ characteristic minerality and freshness. The combination of favorable exposure and unique soil composition allows for the production of vibrant and expressive Aligoté wines.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The 2021 “Albus” Bourgogne Aligoté is produced from carefully selected Aligoté grapes harvested at optimal ripeness. After gentle pressing, the must undergoes alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve the fresh fruit characteristics and vibrant acidity. Malolactic fermentation is encouraged to soften acidity and add complexity. The wine is then aged on its fine lees for several months, with periodic bâtonnage (lees stirring) to enhance mouthfeel and develop richness. This approach ensures a well-balanced wine that showcases the varietal’s crispness while adding depth and texture.

Tasting Notes

The 2021 “Albus” Bourgogne Aligoté presents a pale straw-yellow color with greenish highlights. On the nose, it offers fresh and lively aromas of green apple, citrus zest, and white flowers, complemented by subtle mineral undertones. The palate is crisp and refreshing, with a zesty acidity that enlivens flavors of lemon, lime, and a hint of pear. A touch of creaminess from the lees aging adds balance, leading to a clean, mineral-driven finish. This wine exemplifies the vibrant and approachable nature of the Aligoté varietal.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Bourgogne Aligoté pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. Its bright acidity and mineral notes complement seafood such as oysters, grilled fish, and shrimp. It also pairs well with poultry dishes, creamy sauces, and soft cheeses like goat cheese. The wine’s freshness and complexity make it a versatile companion to many cuisines.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and crispness, serve the “Albus” Bourgogne Aligoté well-chilled at around 8-10°C (46-50°F) in medium-sized white wine glasses. This temperature accentuates the wine’s freshness and allows its nuanced aromas to shine. It’s recommended to open the bottle shortly before serving to preserve its delicate aromatics.

Storage and Aging Potential

While this Bourgogne Aligoté is crafted for early enjoyment, displaying vibrant fruit flavors and crisp acidity, it can also develop additional complexity with short-term cellaring. When stored properly in a cool, dark environment with stable temperatures, it can be enjoyed over the next 2 to 3 years, during which it may develop subtle nuances and a rounder mouthfeel.
