Winery Background and History
Established in 1877 in Pontassieve, Tuscany, Ruffino has a storied legacy in Italian winemaking. The Riserva Ducale was introduced in 1927 as a tribute to the Duke of Aosta, who appointed Ruffino as the official supplier to the Italian royal family in 1890. This wine has since become a flagship, embodying the rich heritage of the Chianti Classico region.
Producer and Winemaker
Ruffino’s winemaking team is dedicated to crafting wines that reflect the authentic character of Tuscany. They combine traditional methods with modern techniques to produce wines of exceptional quality and consistency.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The grapes for Riserva Ducale are sourced from vineyards situated at elevations ranging from 290 to 450 meters above sea level. The soil is typical of the Chianti Classico area, clayey with an abundant presence of ‘Galestro’ rock.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Alcoholic fermentation, aided by pumping over and punching down, is carried out in thermo-controlled stainless steel tanks at an average temperature of 27°C for about 10 days. Maceration on the skins continues for a further 10 days. After completing malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for 24 months in 40-80 hl oak barrels and part in stainless steel and concrete vats, followed by an additional three months of bottle aging.
Tasting Notes
-
Color: Deep ruby red.
-
Aroma: The bouquet is extremely elegant, characterized by fragrant fruity and floral notes. Violets, cherries, berries, and plums are complemented by spicy hints of tobacco and white peppercorns, with delicate hints of roses and flint lingering on the nose.
-
Palate: Intense and velvety, with sensations of fragrant fresh fruit accompanied by sweet but steady tannins that enhance the pleasant spicy flavors. The finish is lingering and fresh, with a pleasant minerality and an aftertaste featuring intriguing notes of rosemary.
Food & Wine Pairing
Riserva Ducale pairs well with traditional Tuscan dishes such as pasta with meat sauce, risotto with mushrooms, cured meats, and long-aged cheeses. It is also perfect with the great tradition of Tuscan grilled meat.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its complexity, serve this wine at a temperature of 18–20°C (64–68°F). Decanting for about an hour before serving can help open up its aromas and flavors.
Storage and Aging Potential
This wine has a longevity of 5 to 10 years. When stored in optimal conditions—a cool, dark place with a consistent temperature—it can develop additional complexity over time.
