Winery Background and History

Tenuta San Guido, located in the Bolgheri region of Tuscany, Italy, is renowned for producing Sassicaia, one of the world’s most iconic wines. The estate was established by Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta in the mid-20th century, who pioneered the use of Cabernet Sauvignon in a region traditionally dominated by Sangiovese. This innovative approach led to the creation of Sassicaia, the first “Super Tuscan” wine, which has since become a benchmark for quality and elegance in Italian winemaking.

Producer and Winemaker

The winemaking team at Tenuta San Guido is dedicated to crafting wines that reflect the unique terroir of Bolgheri. While specific details about the individual winemakers are limited, the estate’s philosophy emphasizes a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation. The team focuses on meticulous vineyard management and precise winemaking techniques to ensure the highest quality in each bottle.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The vineyards of Tenuta San Guido are situated on the rolling hills of Bolgheri, benefiting from a Mediterranean climate characterized by warm, sunny days and cool, breezy nights. The soils are diverse, comprising a mix of limestone, clay, and gravel, which contribute to the complexity and minerality of the wines. The proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea provides a moderating influence, ensuring a long growing season that allows for optimal ripening of the grapes.

Grape Varietals & Percentage Used

The 2021 Sassicaia is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The grapes for the 2021 Sassicaia were hand-harvested and underwent fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks using indigenous yeasts. Maceration periods varied, with some lots experiencing extended maceration of up to 20 days to enhance color and tannin extraction. Following fermentation, the wine was aged for 25 months in French oak barrels, with a composition of 40% new oak, 40% once-used barrels, and 20% twice-used barrels. This aging regimen contributes to the wine’s complexity and structure.

ABV (Alcohol by Volume)

The 2021 Sassicaia has an alcohol content of approximately 14%.

Tasting Notes

The 2021 Sassicaia presents a deep ruby color with violet hues. On the nose, it offers an aromatic bouquet of dark cherries, plums, and sweet red berries, complemented by nuances of spices, fresh florals, sweet tobacco, gravel, and hints of licorice. The palate is rich and elegant, with flavors of dark cherry and plum fruit, spice, new leather, menthol, and licorice racing across the palate. Time in the glass brings out the wine’s textural intensity and sheer power, leading to a long, detailed aftertaste.

Food & Wine Pairing

The 2021 Sassicaia pairs exceptionally well with rich flavors such as braised meats, osso buco, and aged, hard cheeses. Its robust structure and balanced acidity complement hearty dishes, enhancing the dining experience.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its complexity, decant the 2021 Sassicaia for at least one hour before serving. Serve at a temperature of 18°C (64°F) to allow the wine to express its full aromatic and flavor profile.

Storage and Aging Potential

The 2021 Sassicaia is built for long-term aging. While it can be enjoyed in its youth with proper decanting, the wine will benefit from additional cellaring. Under optimal storage conditions—consistent temperature of 12-15°C (54-59°F), moderate humidity, and protection from light and vibration—the wine is expected to develop further complexity and depth over the next 20 to 25 years.
