Winery Background and History
Schloss Gobelsburg, established in 1171, is the oldest winery in the Danube region, located in the Kamptal wine-growing area of Lower Austria. The estate has a rich history of wine production spanning over eight centuries. Since 1996, under the stewardship of Michael Moosbrugger, the winery has focused on traditional winemaking methods and sustainable vineyard practices to produce wines that authentically express the terroir of the region.
Producer and Winemaker
Michael Moosbrugger serves as the winemaker and CEO of Schloss Gobelsburg. His approach emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the natural characteristics of the grapes and the unique qualities of the Kamptal terroir to shine through in each bottle.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The grapes for the Kamptal Grüner Veltliner are sourced from terraced vineyards in the Kamptal region, particularly around the villages of Langenlois and Gobelsburg. The area benefits from a temperate climate with significant diurnal temperature variations, contributing to the development of complex flavors and balanced acidity in the grapes. The soils are diverse, including loess and primary rock, which impart distinct mineral characteristics to the wine.

Vinification & Aging Methods
The 2023 vintage was harvested from mid-September to early October. After careful selection, the grapes underwent fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve their fresh fruit character and vibrant acidity. The wine was then aged on fine lees for a period to enhance its texture and complexity before bottling.

Tasting Notes
The 2023 Kamptal Grüner Veltliner presents a bright, pale yellow hue. On the nose, it offers delicate aromas of white fruits, citrus, and subtle leafy notes. The palate is juicy and fresh, with flavors of green apple, pear, and a hint of white pepper, leading to a crisp, mineral-driven finish.
Food & Wine Pairing
This versatile wine pairs well with a variety of dishes, including seafood, poultry, and vegetarian fare. Its bright acidity and subtle spice make it an excellent companion to dishes featuring asparagus, artichokes, or fresh herbs. Additionally, it complements Asian cuisine and light salads.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its aromatic profile and refreshing character, serve this wine chilled at a temperature between 8°C and 10°C (46°F to 50°F). Using medium-sized white wine glasses will enhance its delicate aromas and flavors.
Storage and Aging Potential
While crafted for immediate enjoyment, this wine can develop additional complexity over the next 2 to 3 years when stored under optimal conditions—away from direct light, at a consistent temperature of around 12°C (54°F), and with appropriate humidity.
Scores and Distinctions
The 2023 vintage has received a rating of 90 points from James Suckling, who noted its fresh and lightly peppery character, with aromas and flavors of sliced pear, grapefruit, white pepper, and celery salt, culminating in a medium-bodied wine with a cool finish.
