Winery Background and History

Schloss Gobelsburg, located in Austria’s Kamptal wine-growing region, is one of the country’s oldest wineries, with a history dating back to 1171. Originally established by Cistercian monks from Burgundy, the estate has been dedicated to viticulture for over eight centuries. In 1996, Michael Moosbrugger assumed management of the winery, ushering in a new era that honors historical practices while embracing modern innovations. Under his leadership, Schloss Gobelsburg has gained international acclaim for its elegant and authentic wines, particularly those crafted from Grüner Veltliner and Riesling varietals. The estate emphasizes sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention in the cellar, aiming to produce wines that reflect the purity and character of their origin.

Producer and Winemaker

Michael Moosbrugger serves as the winemaker and managing director of Schloss Gobelsburg. With a background in both viticulture and enology, he has been instrumental in revitalizing the estate’s vineyards and refining its winemaking techniques. Moosbrugger’s philosophy centers on creating wines that are true to their terroir, employing traditional methods such as aging in large Austrian oak casks and utilizing spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts. His commitment to quality and authenticity has solidified Schloss Gobelsburg’s reputation as a benchmark producer in the Kamptal region.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The Ried Renner vineyard is situated on the slopes adjacent to the renowned Ried Gaisberg terraces in Austria’s Kamptal region. Positioned at an elevation of approximately 300 meters above sea level, the vineyard benefits from a Pannonian climate influence, characterized by warm days and cool nights. This diurnal temperature variation is crucial for preserving acidity and developing aromatic complexity in the grapes. The soil composition in Renner is notably diverse, featuring deeper layers that offer excellent water retention. A significant presence of loess, intermingled with erosion material from primary rock such as brownish para-gneiss, amphibolite, and mica, provides a mineral-rich foundation. This unique soil structure imparts a distinct minerality to the wines, contributing to their complexity and depth. The combination of favorable climatic conditions and intricate soil composition allows the Grüner Veltliner vines to thrive, producing grapes that embody the essence of the Kamptal terroir.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The 2021 Grüner Veltliner Ried Renner is crafted with meticulous attention to detail to preserve the purity and expression of the grape. Hand-harvested grapes are carefully selected to ensure optimal ripeness and health. Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes undergo gentle pressing to extract the juice without imparting harsh phenolics. Fermentation is initiated using indigenous yeasts, a practice that enhances the wine’s connection to its terroir and adds layers of complexity. The fermentation process takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures to maintain the fresh fruit character of the Grüner Veltliner. Following fermentation, the wine is aged on its fine lees in large Austrian oak casks, known as “Fuder,” which have a capacity of approximately 2,500 liters. This aging process, lasting several months, allows the wine to develop a harmonious balance between its vibrant acidity and rich texture. The use of large oak casks imparts subtle oxidative nuances and a gentle oak influence, contributing to the wine’s complexity without overshadowing its varietal expression. Prior to bottling, the wine undergoes minimal filtration to preserve its integrity and ensure clarity.

Tasting Notes

The 2021 Ried Renner Grüner Veltliner presents a shimmering golden hue with green reflections. On the nose, it offers deep scents of ripe yellow apples, complemented by subtle hints of white pepper and a touch of flint. The palate is complete, flowing, long, and fine, with transparency and beautifully weighted flavors. Gently spiced with leafy green herbs and a fine earthiness, the wine exhibits a lush, intense, slightly creamy texture with substance, intensity, and fine tannin grip. The finish is long and aromatic, leaving a lasting impression of elegance and complexity.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Grüner Veltliner pairs exceptionally well with a variety of dishes. Its vibrant acidity and complex flavor profile make it an ideal companion for roasted poultry, such as herb-crusted chicken or turkey. The wine’s subtle spiciness complements Asian cuisine, including dishes like Thai green curry or Vietnamese spring rolls. Additionally, it harmonizes beautifully with rich seafood dishes, such as seared scallops or grilled salmon, and can stand up to creamy sauces and mildly spiced preparations. For cheese pairings, consider semi-soft varieties like Gruyère or aged Gouda, which will complement the wine’s depth and complexity.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate the aromatic complexity and textural nuances of this Grüner Veltliner, it is recommended to serve the wine at a temperature between 10-12°C (50-54°F). Use medium-sized white wine glasses to allow the bouquet to develop fully. Decanting is not necessary; however, opening the bottle about 30 minutes before serving can help the wine to open up and express its full range of flavors.

Storage and Aging Potential

The 2021 Ried Renner Grüner Veltliner is crafted with the structure and balance to age gracefully. When stored under optimal conditions—away from direct light, at a consistent temperature of around 12°C (54°F), and with moderate humidity—the wine can develop additional complexity over the next 5 to 10 years.
