Winery Background and History

Tenuta Luce, located in the Montalcino region of Tuscany, Italy, was established in the early 1990s through a collaboration between the Frescobaldi family and Robert Mondavi. This partnership aimed to create exceptional wines that blend traditional Italian winemaking with innovative techniques. The estate is renowned for its unique approach of combining Sangiovese and Merlot grapes, producing wines that reflect the rich heritage and diverse terroir of Tuscany. Over the years, Tenuta Luce has gained international acclaim for its commitment to quality and distinctive wine profiles.

Producer and Winemaker

The winemaking team at Tenuta Luce is dedicated to crafting wines that embody the essence of their Tuscan vineyards. While specific details about the individual winemakers are limited, the estate’s philosophy emphasizes a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation. The team focuses on meticulous vineyard management and precise winemaking techniques to ensure the highest quality in each bottle.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

Tenuta Luce’s vineyards are situated in the rolling hills of Montalcino, benefiting from a Mediterranean climate characterized by warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The diverse soil composition, including clay, sand, and limestone, provides an ideal environment for cultivating both Sangiovese and Merlot grapes. The varying elevations and exposures within the vineyards contribute to a range of microclimates, allowing for the development of complex and nuanced flavors in the wines.

Grape Varietals & Percentage Used

The 2019 Lucente is a blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Sangiovese.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The grapes for the 2019 Lucente were carefully harvested and underwent fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. This process preserved the fresh fruit characteristics and allowed for optimal extraction of color and flavor. Following fermentation, the wine was aged for 12 months in a combination of new and neutral oak barrels, enhancing its complexity and contributing subtle spice notes.

ABV (Alcohol by Volume)

The 2019 Lucente has an alcohol content of 14.5%.

Tasting Notes

The 2019 Lucente displays a deep purple color. The bouquet is powerful, with aromas of ripe fruit, black cherry, and wild strawberry. Pleasant sweet spices and hints of Mediterranean shrublands bring out the complexity of this wine. The palate is round and velvety with a very fine tannin texture and enlivened by fresh notes of eucalyptus. The slightly smoky finish makes it a complex wine, powerful and elegant.

Food & Wine Pairing

The 2019 Lucente pairs well with a variety of dishes, including roasted meats, pasta with rich sauces, and aged cheeses. Its balanced acidity and tannin structure complement hearty flavors, making it a versatile choice for Italian cuisine and beyond.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its aromatic complexity, serve the 2019 Lucente at a temperature of 16-18°C (60-64°F). Decanting the wine for about 30 minutes prior to serving can help to open up its bouquet and soften the tannins, enhancing the overall tasting experience.

Storage and Aging Potential

The 2019 Lucente is enjoyable upon release but also has the potential to develop further complexity with short-term cellaring. Proper storage conditions include a consistent temperature of 12-15°C (54-59°F), moderate humidity, and protection from light and vibration. Under these conditions, the wine can be enjoyed over the next 5 to 7 years.
