Winery Background and History
Established in 1849 by Samuel Smith, Yalumba is Australia’s oldest family-owned winery. Over six generations, the Hill-Smith family has cultivated a legacy of innovation and sustainability, producing wines that reflect the diverse terroirs of South Australia. The name “Yalumba” is derived from the Aboriginal word meaning “all the land around,” signifying the winery’s deep connection to its land and heritage. Yalumba has been a pioneer in viticulture and winemaking, with a strong commitment to environmental stewardship.
Producer and Winemaker
Yalumba remains under the stewardship of the Hill-Smith family, with Robert Hill-Smith leading as the fifth-generation chairman. The chief winemaker, Louisa Rose, joined Yalumba in 1992 and has been instrumental in shaping the winery’s distinctive style. Renowned for her expertise, particularly with Viognier and Grenache, Louisa ensures that each wine embodies Yalumba’s commitment to quality and regional expression.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The Tri-Centenary Grenache is sourced from a single vineyard of dry-grown bush vines planted in 1889, situated in the heart of the Barossa Valley. These ancient vines are rooted in deep sandy loam soil over red-brown clay, providing excellent drainage and nutrient availability. The Barossa Valley’s Mediterranean climate, characterized by warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters, allows for optimal ripening conditions, contributing to the development of complex flavors in the grapes.

Vinification & Aging Methods
The grapes were handpicked from the 130-year-old bush vines to ensure optimal quality. Post-fermentation, the wine underwent a 100-day maceration period, a hallmark technique for this wine, which imparts an incredibly silky texture and refinement to the palate. This extended skin contact enhances depth, structure, and vibrant acidity, resulting in a textural wine with defined tannins. The wine was then aged in neutral oak to preserve the purity of the fruit flavors.

Tasting Notes
Medium red in color, this Grenache offers aromas of red cherry, berry fruits, anise, and milk chocolate, melded with complex herbs and spices. The palate is rich with sweet red fruits, showcasing a soft texture and elegance, finishing with fine tannins. The wine’s silky texture and vibrant acidity make it both approachable now and suitable for further aging.
Food & Wine Pairing
This versatile Grenache pairs excellently with a variety of dishes. It complements roasted lamb with herbs, grilled sausages, and duck confit. For vegetarian options, consider dishes like roasted vegetable tart or mushroom risotto. The wine’s acidity and tannin structure also make it a good match for aged cheeses.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and structural nuances, serve this wine at 16-18°C (60-65°F). Decanting for about an hour before serving can enhance its expressive character, allowing it to open up and reveal its layered flavors. Using large, tulip-shaped red wine glasses will further elevate the tasting experience.
Storage and Aging Potential
With proper cellaring conditions—cool, dark, and stable environments—this wine can gracefully age for 5-7 years from the vintage date. Over time, it will develop additional complexity, with tertiary notes of leather, earth, and dried herbs complementing its existing flavor profile.
