Winery Background and History: Established in the late 19th century, Vietti is a family-owned winery located in the heart of the Langhe region in Piedmont, Italy. Over four generations, the Vietti family has been dedicated to producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of their vineyards. The “Perbacco” Langhe Nebbiolo is crafted from the same vineyards that produce their esteemed Barolo wines, offering an accessible expression of Nebbiolo while maintaining the winery’s commitment to excellence.

Producer and Winemaker: The Vietti winery is currently managed by the family’s fourth generation, with Luca Currado Vietti serving as the head winemaker. Luca’s innovative approach and deep respect for tradition have propelled Vietti to international acclaim. His meticulous attention to detail, from vineyard management to vinification, ensures that each bottle embodies the essence of its origin.

Vineyards and Microclimate: The grapes for “Perbacco” are sourced from various vineyards within the Barolo region, specifically in the communes of Castiglione Falletto, Monforte, and Barolo. These sites are characterized by calcareous-clay soils and benefit from a continental climate with significant diurnal temperature variations. Such conditions are ideal for cultivating Nebbiolo, allowing for the development of complex aromas and balanced acidity.

Grape Varietals & Percentage Used: 100% Nebbiolo

Vinification & Aging Methods: The 2021 “Perbacco” undergoes traditional vinification, starting with fermentation in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. Maceration on the skins lasts approximately 3 to 4 weeks to extract optimal color and tannins. Following fermentation, the wine is aged for about 2 years in a combination of large Slavonian oak casks and French barriques. This aging process enhances the wine’s complexity and structure while preserving its vibrant fruit character.

ABV (Alcohol by Volume): Approximately 14%

Tasting Notes: The 2021 “Perbacco” Langhe Nebbiolo presents a brilliant ruby-red color. On the nose, it offers enticing aromas of sour cherry, rose petals, and subtle hints of thyme and mint. The palate is vibrant and well-structured, showcasing flavors of red berries, spices, and a faint salinity. The wine’s round and elegant tannins contribute to a long, refined finish, indicating its robustness and potential for aging.

Food & Wine Pairing: This versatile Nebbiolo pairs well with a variety of dishes. It complements traditional Italian fare such as risotto with truffles, mushroom-based dishes, and hearty pastas. The wine’s acidity and tannic structure also make it an excellent match for roasted meats, game, and aged cheeses. Its balance and depth enhance the flavors of rich, savory dishes, making it a delightful addition to any meal.

Service Methods and Temperatures: To fully appreciate the nuances of the 2021 “Perbacco,” it is recommended to serve the wine at a temperature between 16°C and 18°C (60°F to 64°F). Decanting for about an hour prior to serving can help open up its aromatic profile and soften the tannins. Utilizing large, tulip-shaped wine glasses will concentrate the bouquet and direct the wine to the appropriate areas of the palate, enhancing the overall tasting experience.

Storage and Aging Potential: When stored under optimal conditions—away from direct light, at a consistent temperature of 12°C to 15°C (54°F to 59°F), and with controlled humidity—the 2021 “Perbacco” Langhe Nebbiolo has the potential to age gracefully for up to 5 to 7 years. As it matures, expect the emergence of tertiary flavors such as leather, tobacco, and dried fruits, adding depth and complexity to the wine’s profile.
