Winery Background and History: Established in 1873, Vietti is a renowned winery located in the heart of the Langhe region in Piedmont, Italy. Over the decades, the estate has gained international acclaim for its dedication to producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region. In 2022, due to changes in labeling laws, the winery rebranded its “Tre Vigne” line to “Trevìe,” symbolizing the three distinct Vietti wines in this collection.

Producer and Winemaker: The Vietti winery is owned by the Krause family, who have maintained the estate’s legacy of excellence. The winemaking is overseen by Eugenio Palumbo, whose meticulous approach combines traditional methods with modern innovations to craft wines that authentically express the character of their origin.

Vineyards and Microclimate: The grapes for the “Trevìe” Barbera d’Asti are sourced from vineyards in Agliano Terme, within the Asti province of Piedmont. This area is characterized by its limestone and clay-rich soils, providing an ideal environment for Barbera cultivation. The region’s temperate climate, with its balanced rainfall and sunshine, contributes to the development of the grape’s vibrant acidity and rich fruit flavors.

Grape Varietals & Percentage Used: 100% Barbera

Vinification & Aging Methods: The winemaking process begins with cold maceration in stainless steel tanks to preserve the grape’s fresh fruit characteristics. Fermentation follows, and the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in oak. The aging process spans 12 months and utilizes a combination of barriques, large oak casks, and stainless steel tanks. This method enhances the wine’s complexity, allowing for a harmonious integration of flavors and a balanced structure.

ABV (Alcohol by Volume): 14%

Tasting Notes: The 2022 “Trevìe” Barbera d’Asti presents a ruby-red hue, indicative of its youthful vibrancy. On the nose, it exudes aromas of sour cherries and violets, complemented by subtle vanilla undertones. The palate is medium-bodied and dry, featuring a harmonious balance of refreshing acidity and soft tannins. Flavors of dark cherries and plums are prominent, with hints of mocha and chocolate adding depth. The finish is well-balanced, showcasing good complexity and a lingering red cherry aftertaste.

Food & Wine Pairing: This versatile Barbera d’Asti pairs exceptionally well with a variety of dishes. Its bright acidity and medium body make it an excellent companion for antipasti, rich salads, and grilled vegetables. It also complements hearty soups, pastas with tomato-based sauces, and breaded veal, pork, or chicken dishes with light sauces. The wine’s fruit-forward profile and balanced structure enhance the flavors of these dishes without overpowering them.

Service Methods and Temperatures: To fully appreciate the nuances of the 2022 “Trevìe” Barbera d’Asti, it is recommended to serve the wine at a temperature between 14°C and 16°C (57°F to 61°F). While decanting is not essential, allowing the wine to breathe for about 30 minutes before serving can help open up its aromatic profile and soften the tannins. Utilizing medium-sized, tulip-shaped wine glasses will concentrate the bouquet and enhance the tasting experience.

Storage and Aging Potential: When stored under optimal conditions—away from direct light, at a consistent temperature of 12°C to 15°C (54°F to 59°F), and with controlled humidity—the 2022 “Trevìe” Barbera d’Asti can develop additional complexity over the next 3 to 5 years. As it matures, expect the emergence of subtle tertiary flavors, such as dried fruits and earthy undertones, adding depth to the wine’s profile.
