Winery Background and History

Established in 1849 by Samuel Smith, Yalumba is Australia’s oldest family-owned winery, located in the Barossa Valley, South Australia. The name “Yalumba” is derived from the Aboriginal word meaning “all the land around.” Over six generations, the Hill-Smith family has maintained a commitment to innovation and sustainability, producing a diverse range of wines that reflect the unique terroir of their vineyards. The Y Series represents a collection of iconic classics and exciting new varietals, authentically crafted with fruit from South Australia’s most celebrated wine regions.

Producer and Winemaker

Yalumba remains under the stewardship of the Hill-Smith family, with Robert Hill-Smith leading the fifth generation. The chief winemaker, Louisa Rose, has been with Yalumba since 1992 and is acclaimed for her expertise, particularly with Viognier and other white varietals. Her dedication to crafting wines that express both varietal and regional characteristics has solidified Yalumba’s reputation for excellence.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The grapes for the Y Series Pinot Grigio are sourced from multiple vineyards across South Australia, including the Riverland region. These areas experience a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild winters, ideal for cultivating Pinot Grigio. The diverse soil compositions and elevations ranging from 150 to 1500 feet contribute to the wine’s complexity and vibrant acidity.

Grape Varietals & Percentage Used

100% Pinot Grigio

Vinification & Aging Methods

The grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness to retain fresh fruit flavors. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks to preserve the varietal’s aromatic profile. Post-fermentation, the wine is aged on lees to enhance texture and mouthfeel, resulting in a crisp and refreshing style that showcases the purity of the fruit.

Tasting Notes

The 2021 Yalumba Y Series Pinot Grigio displays aromas of fresh pear juice with white flowers and a hint of feijoa. On the palate, it opens with Nashi pear and jasmine, followed by baked apple and cinnamon through the mid-palate. These generous fruit flavors are complemented by a rich, creamy, lingering finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Pinot Grigio pairs excellently with dishes such as pork fillet accompanied by apple and fennel or vegetable san choy bow. Its vibrant acidity and fruit-forward profile also complement spicy cuisines, mushrooms, and cured meats, making it a versatile choice for various culinary experiences.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and refreshing character, serve this Pinot Grigio chilled at 8-10°C (46-50°F). Using medium-sized white wine glasses will allow the aromas to concentrate, enhancing the tasting experience. Decanting is not necessary; however, allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after pouring can open up its expressive character.

Storage and Aging Potential

While this Pinot Grigio is crafted for immediate enjoyment, it can maintain its freshness and vibrant fruit flavors for up to 2 years from the vintage date when stored under proper conditions—cool, dark, and stable environments. However, it is recommended to consume it young to fully enjoy its lively acidity and aromatic profile.
