Winery Background and History

Established in 1849 by Samuel Smith, Yalumba is Australia’s oldest family-owned winery, located in the Barossa Valley, South Australia. The name “Yalumba” is derived from the Aboriginal word meaning “all the land around.” Over six generations, the Hill-Smith family has maintained a commitment to sustainable viticulture and innovative winemaking practices. Yalumba has been a pioneer in organic and sustainable wine production, reflecting their dedication to environmental stewardship and quality.

Producer and Winemaker

Yalumba remains under the stewardship of the Hill-Smith family, with Robert Hill-Smith as the current proprietor. The Chief Winemaker, Louisa Rose, has been with Yalumba since 1992 and is renowned for her expertise and innovative approach, particularly with varietals like Viognier and Shiraz. Her philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the vineyard’s natural expression to shine through in the wines.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The grapes for the GEN Organic Shiraz 2021 are sourced from six family-owned vineyards across South Australia, including the Carypidis family vineyard in Virginia, the Barich family vineyard on the Murray River at Loxton, the Palena family vineyard near Barmera in the Riverland, the Strachan family vineyards in McLaren Vale and Renmark, and a biodynamic block at the Oxford Landing Vineyard in Waikerie. These regions exhibit diverse microclimates, ranging from Mediterranean to semi-arid, with varying elevations and soil compositions, contributing to the wine’s complexity and depth.

Grape Varietals & Percentage Used

100% Shiraz

Vinification & Aging Methods

The grapes undergo a 1-3 day pre-fermentation maceration on skins before wild yeast fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally, and the wine is aged in stainless steel to preserve its fresh, fruit-driven character. No oak is used, and the wine is made with minimal intervention, aligning with organic and sustainable practices.

Tasting Notes

This wine displays a deep crimson color with aromas of purple flowers such as violets and lavender, combined with blueberries, plums, and forest floor notes. The palate is fruit-driven and medium-bodied, featuring bright fruit flavors, plush soft tannins, and a juicy finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

The vibrant fruit flavors and soft tannins of this Shiraz make it a versatile pairing with various dishes. It complements grilled meats, roasted vegetables, and hearty pasta dishes. The wine’s acidity and fruitiness also pair well with spicy cuisines, such as Sri Lankan vegetable curry, enhancing the flavors without overpowering the dish.

Service Methods and Temperatures

For optimal enjoyment, serve this Shiraz at a temperature between 16-18°C (60-64°F). Using medium-sized red wine glasses will allow the wine’s aromas to concentrate and enhance the tasting experience. Decanting is not necessary for this wine; however, allowing it to breathe for a few minutes after opening can help in expressing its aromatic profile.

Storage and Aging Potential

This wine is crafted for immediate enjoyment but can develop additional complexity over the next 2-3 years. Store bottles in a cool, dark place with a consistent temperature between 12-15°C (54-59°F) and moderate humidity. Proper storage will maintain the wine’s freshness and allow subtle tertiary flavors to emerge over time.
