Established in 1849 by Samuel Smith, Yalumba is Australia’s oldest family-owned winery, located in the Barossa Valley, South Australia. The name “Yalumba” is derived from the Aboriginal word meaning “all the land around.” Over six generations, the Hill-Smith family has maintained a commitment to quality and innovation, evolving from fortified wines to a diverse portfolio that includes some of Australia’s most iconic wines. In 1993, Yalumba acquired The Menzies Vineyard in Coonawarra, recognizing the region’s potential for producing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon.


Producer and Winemaker

Yalumba remains under the stewardship of the Hill-Smith family, with Robert Hill-Smith as the current proprietor. The winemaking team, led by Chief Winemaker Louisa Rose, emphasizes minimal intervention and sustainable practices. Their philosophy focuses on allowing the vineyard’s natural characteristics to shine through, resulting in wines that authentically represent the terroir of their respective regions.


Vineyards and Micro Climate

The Menzies Vineyard is situated in Coonawarra, South Australia, renowned for its terra rossa soils—rich, red loam over limestone—that contribute to the distinctive character of the region’s wines. The Mediterranean climate, characterized by warm, dry summers and cool winters, provides ideal conditions for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2015 vintage experienced a warm growing season with timely rainfall, leading to optimal ripening and flavor development in the grapes.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The grapes were harvested at optimal ripeness and fermented in static fermenters, allowing for extended skin contact to extract color, flavor, and tannins. Post-fermentation, the wine was matured for 18 months in a combination of French, Hungarian, and American oak barrels, with a portion being new oak and the remainder in seasoned barrels. This careful aging process enhances the wine’s structure and integrates complex flavors.

Tasting Notes

The Menzies 2015 displays a dark cherry red color with a crimson hue. Elegant and inviting aromas of cedar and chocolate combine beautifully with rich, ripe cassis and violets. On the palate, the wine is dry with high acidity, medium-high fine-grained ripe tannins, medium-plus body, and flavors of dark berries and subtle oak nuances. The finish is long and satisfying, with sublime tannins indicating excellent aging potential. 


Food & Wine Pairing

This wine pairs excellently with rich, savory dishes such as char-grilled rib eye on the bone or porcini risotto. The wine’s structure and depth harmonize with robust flavors, enhancing the overall dining experience. 


Service Methods and Temperatures

For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for at least an hour before serving to allow it to breathe and reveal its intricate aromas. Serve at a temperature between 16-18°C (60-64°F) in large-bowled red wine glasses to concentrate the bouquet and guide the wine to the appropriate area of the palate.


Storage and Aging Potential

The Menzies 2015 is built for longevity, with the potential to age gracefully over the next 12-15 years. Store bottles horizontally in a cool, dark place with a consistent temperature around 12-14°C (54-57°F) and moderate humidity. Proper cellaring will allow the wine to develop further complexity, rewarding patience with enhanced tertiary flavors and a harmonious palate.
