Winery Background and History
Established in 1849 by Samuel Smith, Yalumba is Australia’s oldest family-owned winery, located near Angaston in the Barossa Valley, South Australia. The name “Yalumba” is derived from an indigenous Australian word meaning “all the land around.” Over six generations, the Hill-Smith family has maintained a commitment to quality and innovation, evolving from fortified wines to a diverse portfolio that includes some of Australia’s most iconic wines.
Producer and Winemaker
Yalumba remains under the stewardship of the Hill-Smith family, with Robert Hill-Smith as the current proprietor. The Chief Winemaker, Kevin Glastonbury, brings decades of experience and a deep understanding of Barossa’s terroir. His philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention and showcases the purity of fruit, resulting in wines of exceptional balance and complexity.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The Octavius is crafted from Shiraz grapes sourced from old vine vineyards in the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley. These regions exhibit diverse microclimates, with the Barossa Valley providing warmth and richness, while the higher-altitude Eden Valley contributes cooler temperatures, enhancing aromatic freshness. The 2016 vintage experienced a moderate winter followed by a warm, dry spring and summer, with a beneficial 25mm rainfall at the end of January, leading to optimal ripening conditions.
Grape Varietals & Percentage Used
100% Shiraz
Vinification & Aging Methods
The grapes were handpicked and fermented in small batches using wild yeasts. Post-fermentation, the wine was matured for 22 months in a combination of French and American oak octaves (100-liter barrels), with 25% new oak and the remainder in older barrels. This unique aging process imparts complexity and integrates the wine’s flavors harmoniously.

Tasting Notes
The Octavius 2016 exhibits a very deep purple-red color. Alluring aromas of dark red cherries, red licorice, and red raspberries are prominent. On the palate, it showcases richness with dark berry and fruit compote flavors, perfectly balanced with elegance and refinement.
Food & Wine Pairing
This wine pairs excellently with rich, savory dishes such as braised beef cheeks, slow-cooked lamb shanks, or aged cheddar cheese. The wine’s structure and depth harmonize with the robust flavors, enhancing the overall dining experience.
Service Methods and Temperatures
For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for at least an hour before serving to allow it to breathe and reveal its intricate aromas. Serve at a temperature between 16-18°C (60-64°F) in large-bowled red wine glasses to concentrate the bouquet and guide the wine to the appropriate area of the palate.
Storage and Aging Potential
The Octavius 2016 is built for longevity, with the potential to age gracefully over the next 15+ years. Store bottles horizontally in a cool, dark place with a consistent temperature around 12-14°C (54-57°F) and moderate humidity. Proper cellaring will allow the wine to develop further complexity, rewarding patience with enhanced tertiary flavors and a harmonious palate.
