Winery Background and History

Château des Jacques, acquired by Maison Louis Jadot in 1996, is a distinguished estate in the Beaujolais region, renowned for producing wines that reflect the unique terroirs of the area. The estate emphasizes traditional winemaking techniques combined with meticulous vineyard management to craft wines of exceptional quality and character.

Producer and Winemaker

The 2020 Morgon Côte du Py is produced by Château des Jacques, under the guidance of Technical Director Julie Pitoiset. The winemaking team focuses on expressing the distinctive characteristics of the Côte du Py vineyard, resulting in wines that are both elegant and expressive.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The Côte du Py vineyard is a notable single-vineyard site within the Morgon appellation, one of the ten Crus of Beaujolais. Situated on the slopes of an extinct volcano over the village of Villié-Morgon, the 13-acre vineyard benefits from an ideal terroir composed of granite and schist soils. This unique composition contributes to the wine’s complexity and depth. The south- to southeast-facing slopes provide optimal sun exposure, aiding in the full ripening of the Gamay grapes.

Grape Varietals & Percentage Used

100% Gamay

Vinification & Aging Methods

The Gamay grapes undergo fermentation in vats for approximately 20 days to extract color, tannins, and aromas. Post-fermentation, the wine is matured in oak barrels for 12 months, with 30% of the barrels being new oak. This maturation process is unusual for Beaujolais wines and imparts additional complexity and structure to the final product.

Tasting Notes

The 2020 Château des Jacques Morgon Côte du Py displays a deep cherry color with aromas of nuts and red fruits. On the palate, it offers firm tannins that can be austere in their youth, suggesting significant aging potential. The volcanic soils of Côte du Py contribute to a deep mineral savor, enhancing the wine’s complexity. Strawberry and bruised-apple flavors are fresh, complemented by savory tannins with the complex bitterness of flower petals, leading to an earthy and lasting finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

This wine pairs well with duck, squab, and other poultry, especially when prepared with rich sauces such as a thick plum sauce. It also complements strong cheeses, enhancing the overall dining experience.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and structure, it is recommended to serve the wine at a temperature between 16-18°C (61-64°F). Decanting for about 30 minutes before serving can help open up its bouquet and flavors.

Storage and Aging Potential

The 2020 Morgon Côte du Py has significant aging potential. While it can be consumed immediately, it will soften and develop with a few years of aging. Proper storage in a cool, dark place with stable temperature and humidity will ensure its optimal evolution, allowing the wine to gain additional complexity and depth over time.
