Winery Background and History

Château des Jacques, situated in the Beaujolais region of France, is renowned for producing wines that embody the unique characteristics of their terroir. The estate is particularly noted for its single-vineyard wines, with Clos de Rochegrès being among the most esteemed. This vineyard spans 24 acres and is distinguished by its granitic soils, which contribute to the wine’s distinctive profile.

Producer and Winemaker

The winemaking team at Château des Jacques is dedicated to traditional methods that highlight the expression of the Gamay grape. Their approach includes meticulous vineyard management and careful vinification processes to ensure the production of high-quality wines that reflect the essence of their origin.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The Clos de Rochegrès vineyard is located within the Moulin-à-Vent appellation, often referred to as the most “Burgundian” of the Beaujolais crus due to its complexity and aging potential. The vineyard’s granitic, shallow soils overlay an extremely hard bedrock, providing excellent drainage and mineral influence. The continental climate, characterized by warm summers and cool winters, offers optimal conditions for cultivating the Gamay grape.

Grape Varietals & Percentage Used

100% Gamay

Vinification & Aging Methods

After a portion of the grapes are destemmed, vinification occurs in closed vats with regular pumping over to enhance extraction. The wine is then matured in oak barrels for 10 to 11 months, which contributes to its complexity and aging potential.

Tasting Notes

The 2021 Château des Jacques Moulin-à-Vent Clos de Rochegrès presents a reserved nose with aromas of pomegranate, red and black cherry, rhubarb, forest floor, and black plum, accented by hints of dried hay. On the palate, streaks of granite and wet river stone complement the tart red fruit flavors, culminating in a wine that is both complex and elegant.

Food & Wine Pairing

This wine pairs exceptionally well with red meats in sauce, venison, game dishes, and a variety of cheeses. Its generous palate and elegant tannins make it a versatile companion to hearty and flavorful dishes.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its complexity, serve this wine at a temperature between 16 to 18 degrees Celsius (61 to 64 degrees Fahrenheit). Decanting for about 30 minutes before serving can help open up its aromas and flavors.

Storage and Aging Potential

The 2021 vintage of Clos de Rochegrès has significant aging potential. While approachable in its youth, it is expected to develop greater complexity and depth over the next 10 to 20 years when stored in optimal conditions.
