Winery Background and History

Established in 1880 by Edouard Amouroux, Clos de l’Oratoire des Papes is a historic estate located in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation of France’s Rhône Valley. The estate is renowned for producing wines that authentically express the region’s diverse terroirs. In 1999, Ogier acquired the estate, continuing its legacy of crafting exceptional wines.

Producer and Winemaker

Under the ownership of Ogier, the winemaking team at Clos de l’Oratoire des Papes combines traditional techniques with modern innovations. Their philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the natural qualities of the grapes and terroir to shine through, resulting in wines that truly represent Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s rich viticultural heritage.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The estate’s vineyards are situated in the upper part of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape region, benefiting from a Mediterranean climate characterized by hot summers and mild winters. The terroir consists of limestone fragments and sandy soils, contributing to the wine’s freshness and minerality.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Grapes are hand-harvested early to enhance the expression of the terroir. The whole clusters undergo direct pressing in a 30 hL closed cage pneumatic press, followed by moderate settling for 12 hours at low temperatures (6°C). Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks and 22 hL concrete ovoid tanks at temperatures between 15 and 18°C. Post-fermentation filtering removes large sediments, and the wine is aged for six months on fine lees—80% in ovoid tanks, which enable natural stirring of the lees, and 20% in oak barrels.

Tasting Notes

The 2023 vintage displays a golden yellow hue with delicate green glimmers. The nose combines aromas of white-fleshed fruits such as pear and quince, along with delicate floral notes like hawthorn. Subtle hints of white flowers intertwine with a touch of flint. On the palate, the wine reflects its pure limestone terroir with a mineral backbone that structures the mouthfeel, leading to a delicate bitterness on the finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

This wine pairs excellently with dishes such as monkfish tails in a saffron sauce, scallop tartare, grilled lobster, or hard cheeses. Its freshness and minerality complement the richness of these dishes, enhancing the overall dining experience.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its aromatic profile and texture, serve the 2023 Clos de l’Oratoire des Papes Blanc at a temperature of 12°C (54°F). This allows the wine’s complexity and natural freshness to be fully expressed.

Storage and Aging Potential

This cuvée can be enjoyed in its youth to appreciate its freshness, fruitiness, and salinity. Alternatively, it can be cellared for several years, during which it will develop additional complexity and nuance.

Grape Varietals & Percentage Used

The blend consists of Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc, Clairette, and Roussanne. Specific percentages may vary depending on the vintage.
