Winery Background and History

Masi Agricola, a family-owned winery in the Veneto region of Italy, has been a prominent figure in winemaking since the 18th century. The Boscaini family, who have managed the estate for seven generations, are known for their dedication to traditional techniques and innovation. Masi is particularly renowned for pioneering the “Appassimento” method, which involves drying grapes to concentrate their flavors. This technique is a hallmark of their Amarone wines, reflecting the rich heritage and terroir of the Valpolicella region.

Producer and Winemaker

Masi Agricola produces the Bonacosta under the expertise of their technical team, led by Raffaele Boscaini. The team combines traditional winemaking practices with modern technology to craft wines that express the unique characteristics of the Veneto region. Their approach emphasizes sustainability, precision, and respect for the local environment, ensuring each bottle reflects the quality and authenticity Masi is known for.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The Bonacosta vineyards are situated in the heart of Valpolicella Classico, characterized by rolling hills, calcareous soils, and a temperate climate influenced by Lake Garda. These conditions provide optimal sun exposure and ventilation, promoting the cultivation of high-quality grapes. The unique microclimate contributes to the development of complex aromas and flavors in the wines, reflecting the distinctiveness of the region.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Bonacosta is crafted using a unique double fermentation technique. Initially, fresh grapes undergo fermentation, followed by a second fermentation with a portion of semi-dried grapes, enhancing the wine’s richness and complexity. This method, inspired by the traditional “Ripasso” technique, results in a wine that bridges the gap between Valpolicella and Amarone styles. The wine is then aged in a combination of Slavonian oak barrels and smaller French oak casks for approximately 18 months, allowing it to develop depth and character.

Tasting Notes

The 2022 Bonacosta exhibits a deep ruby red color. On the nose, it offers aromas of ripe cherries, plums, and hints of spice and vanilla. The palate is rich and velvety, featuring flavors of dark berries, dried fruits, and subtle notes of cocoa and licorice. Balanced acidity and smooth tannins lead to a long, elegant finish, making it a versatile and approachable wine.

Food & Wine Pairing

This wine pairs excellently with a variety of dishes, including grilled meats, roasted poultry, and hearty pasta dishes. Its robust flavor profile complements aged cheeses and mushroom-based recipes. Bonacosta’s versatility also makes it suitable for enjoying on its own or with a charcuterie board during social gatherings.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve Bonacosta at a temperature of 16–18°C (60–64°F) to fully appreciate its aromas and flavors. Decanting for about 30 minutes before serving can enhance its complexity. Use large red wine glasses to allow the wine to breathe and express its full bouquet.

Storage and Aging Potential

While Bonacosta is enjoyable upon release, it has the potential to age gracefully for up to 10 years. Proper storage in a cool, dark place with stable temperatures will allow the wine to develop additional nuances, such as tertiary aromas of leather and dried herbs, enhancing its overall complexity.
