Winery Background and History
Masi Agricola, established in 1772, is a renowned family-owned winery located in the Valpolicella region of Veneto, Italy. With over two centuries of winemaking tradition, Masi has been instrumental in refining the appassimento technique, which involves drying grapes to concentrate their flavors. The winery is celebrated for producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region, combining traditional methods with innovative practices.
Producer and Winemaker
The Boscaini family, owners of Masi Agricola, have been stewards of the winery for seven generations. Their commitment to excellence is evident in their meticulous vineyard management and winemaking processes. The family emphasizes sustainability and innovation, ensuring that each bottle embodies the rich heritage and quality standards that Masi is known for.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The Campolongo di Torbe vineyard is situated in the commune of Negrar within the Valpolicella Classico zone. Positioned at elevations between 375 and 400 meters above sea level, the vineyard benefits from a southwest exposure and is characterized by red eocenic limestone soils with excellent drainage. The terraced landscape, supported by traditional dry stone walls known as “marogne,” combined with good ventilation, creates an ideal microclimate for cultivating grapes with concentrated flavors and balanced acidity.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Harvested in early October, the grapes undergo the traditional “appassimento” process, where they are dried on bamboo racks in well-ventilated lofts until mid-February, resulting in a weight loss of 35–40%. After gentle pressing, fermentation occurs over 45 days in large Slavonian oak barrels at naturally low temperatures. The wine is then aged for three years: 60% in large Slavonian oak barrels (30–40 hl) and 40% in smaller Slavonian and Allier oak casks (600 liters), followed by a minimum of six months of bottle aging.
Tasting Notes
The 2012 Campolongo di Torbe Amarone exhibits a deep garnet color. The nose is intense and complex, offering aromas of dried fruit, cinnamon, and hints of baked fruit. On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied, with flavors of ripe cherries, baked plums, and bitter almonds. The wine’s structure is firm and well-balanced, featuring smooth and silky tannins, and a long, intense finish.
Food & Wine Pairing
This elegant Amarone pairs excellently with red meats, game, quail, and richly flavored dishes. It also complements mature cheeses such as parmesan, pecorino, and gorgonzola. Additionally, it serves as an exceptional after-dinner wine, offering a perfect conclusion to a fine meal.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its nuances, serve this wine at a temperature of 18°C (64°F). Decanting for about 30 minutes before serving can help open up its aromas and flavors. Using appropriate glassware, such as a large red wine glass, will further enhance the tasting experience.
Storage and Aging Potential
With proper storage in a cool, dark place, this wine has the potential to age gracefully for up to 35–40 years. Over time, it is expected to develop additional complexity, with the integration of its fruit, tannin, and oak components becoming more harmonious.
