Winery Background and History
Founded in 1956 in Calamandrana, Piedmont, Michele Chiarlo is a family-owned winery renowned for producing wines that express the unique terroirs of the region. The winery emphasizes sustainable viticulture and traditional winemaking techniques, crafting wines that reflect the elegance and complexity of Piedmont’s native grape varieties. Michele Chiarlo’s commitment to quality and innovation has established it as a benchmark producer in the Langhe and Monferrato areas.
Producer and Winemaker
Michele Chiarlo, the founder, has been instrumental in elevating the reputation of Piedmontese wines on the global stage. His son, Stefano Chiarlo, continues the legacy, overseeing viticulture and winemaking. Their philosophy centers on minimal intervention, allowing the character of each vineyard to shine through. The Chiarlo family’s dedication ensures that each bottle embodies the essence of its origin.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The Nebbiolo grapes for Il Principe are sourced from vineyards in Barbaresco and Vezza d’Alba in the Roero area. Barbaresco’s bluish-grey calcareous-clay marl soils are rich in minerals like manganese and potassium, while Roero’s sandy soils contribute to the wine’s aromatic finesse. The continental climate, with its significant diurnal temperature variations, enhances the grapes’ aromatic complexity and acidity, resulting in a balanced and expressive wine.
Vinification & Aging Methods
After hand-harvesting, the grapes undergo a 10-day maceration in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures between 28°C and 32°C. A gentle “shower” system is used to wet the cap, ensuring delicate extraction of color and tannins. Malolactic fermentation follows in steel tanks. The wine is then aged for a minimum of 12 months in a combination of steel, wood, and bottle, allowing it to develop complexity while preserving its fresh fruit character.
Tasting Notes
Il Principe 2022 displays a brilliant garnet red color. The nose is ample and delicate, with pronounced notes of violet, red fruits, plums, and fine spices. On the palate, it is harmonious and well-structured, featuring fine tannins and a round, persistent finish. The wine’s balance and elegance make it a quintessential expression of Nebbiolo from the Langhe region.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Nebbiolo pairs excellently with pasta dishes featuring meat ragù, roasted turkey, and medium-aged cheeses. Its refined structure and aromatic profile also complement grilled meats and mushroom-based dishes, making it a versatile choice for various culinary experiences.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve Il Principe at a temperature of 17–18°C (62–64°F) to fully appreciate its aromatic nuances and structural balance. Decanting for about 30 minutes before serving can enhance its complexity. Use large red wine glasses to allow the wine to breathe and express its full bouquet.
Storage and Aging Potential
While Il Principe is enjoyable upon release, it has the potential to age gracefully for up to 5–7 years. Proper storage in a cool, dark place with stable temperatures will allow the wine to develop additional nuances, such as tertiary aromas of leather and dried herbs, enhancing its overall complexity.
