Winery Background and History
Founded in 1772, Masi Agricola is a prestigious family-owned winery located in the Valpolicella region of Veneto, Italy. The Boscaini family, stewards of Masi for seven generations, have been instrumental in reviving the ancient Oseleta grape, which had nearly vanished. Their dedication to traditional methods, such as the appassimento technique of drying grapes, combined with innovative practices, has positioned Masi as a leader in producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region.
Producer and Winemaker
The Boscaini family oversees Masi’s winemaking operations, with Sandro Boscaini at the helm. Their commitment to excellence is evident in their meticulous vineyard management and winemaking processes. The family emphasizes sustainability and innovation, ensuring that each bottle embodies the rich heritage and quality standards that Masi is known for.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The grapes for Osar are sourced from hillside vineyards in the communes of Marano, Sant’Ambrogio, and Bussolengo. These areas benefit from a temperate climate with significant diurnal temperature variations, promoting the development of complex aromas and flavors. The soil composition, primarily alluvial and stony, provides excellent drainage and contributes to the mineral complexity of the wine.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo meticulous sorting to ensure only the best fruit is used. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures, followed by aging in oak barrels. This process imparts depth and complexity, resulting in a wine that balances richness with structure.
Tasting Notes
Osar 2016 exhibits a deep, opaque red color with violet tinges. The nose is intense, offering aromas of berry fruits, particularly blueberries. On the palate, it presents flavors of berries, young tannins, and a long finish. The wine is full-bodied, with persistent berry fruit aromas and notes of coffee and bitter chocolate on the finish.
Food & Wine Pairing
This robust red pairs well with rich dishes such as braised meats, roasted game, and aged cheeses. Its structure and complexity also make it a suitable companion for hearty pasta dishes and grilled vegetables. Additionally, it can be enjoyed on its own as a meditation wine.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its nuances, serve this wine at a temperature of 15–18°C (59–64°F). Decanting for about 30 minutes before serving can help open up its aromas and flavors. Using appropriate glassware, such as a Bordeaux glass, will further enhance the tasting experience.
Storage and Aging Potential
With proper storage in a cool, dark place, this wine has the potential to age gracefully for up to 20 years. Over time, it is expected to develop additional complexity, with the integration of its fruit, tannin, and oak components becoming more harmonious. Monitoring the wine’s development periodically will ensure it is enjoyed at its peak.
