Winery Background and History

Founded in 1974 by Giuseppe Castiglioni, Querciabella is a renowned winery located in Tuscany’s Chianti Classico region. The estate has been a pioneer in adopting organic practices since 1988 and biodynamic viticulture by 2000, emphasizing sustainability and environmental stewardship. This commitment has positioned Querciabella as a leader in producing wines that authentically express the unique terroir of their vineyards. Ardalico is one of the estate’s Chianti Classico offerings, crafted to showcase the purity and vibrancy of the Sangiovese grape.

Producer and Winemaker

Under the guidance of Sebastiano Cossia Castiglioni, Querciabella continues to uphold its philosophy of minimal intervention and respect for nature. The winemaking team focuses on creating wines that reflect the purity and character of the Sangiovese grape. Their approach combines meticulous vineyard management with precise vinification methods to ensure each bottle embodies the essence of its origin.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The Sangiovese grapes for Ardalico are sourced from high-altitude vineyards in the Chianti Classico region, specifically from the communes of Greve, Radda, and Gaiole. These vineyards benefit from diverse soil compositions—sandstone in Greve, galestro in Radda, and alberese in Gaiole—each contributing unique characteristics to the wine. The varying elevations and orientations provide a favorable microclimate, characterized by significant diurnal temperature variations, which contribute to the development of grapes with vibrant acidity and concentrated flavors.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Fermentation occurred in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, utilizing indigenous yeasts to preserve the grape’s natural character. The wine was then aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, followed by additional bottle aging before release. This approach allows for a balance between the freshness of the fruit and the subtle influence of oak, resulting in a harmonious and elegant wine.

Tasting Notes

The 2019 Ardalico Chianti Classico presents a bright ruby-red color. The nose is characterized by aromas of red and purple berry fruits, spice, cedar, and floral notes. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with flavors of cherry, currant, earth, and wild herbs. The wine’s fine tannins and balanced acidity lead to a persistent and savory finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

Ardalico’s lively acidity and bright fruit profile make it an excellent companion to dishes featuring tomato-based sauces, such as pasta al pomodoro or Margherita pizza. Its versatility also allows it to pair well with roasted poultry, grilled vegetables, and a variety of Mediterranean-inspired dishes. The wine’s freshness complements the flavors of herbs like basil and oregano, enhancing the overall dining experience.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its aromatic profile and structure, serve the 2019 Ardalico at a temperature of 14–18°C (57–64°F). Decanting is not necessary for this youthful wine; however, allowing it to breathe for about 30 minutes before serving can help open up its bouquet. Use medium-sized, tulip-shaped wine glasses to concentrate the aromas and enhance the tasting experience.

Storage and Aging Potential

While the 2019 Ardalico is crafted for immediate enjoyment, it has the potential to age gracefully for up to five years when stored in optimal conditions—cool, dark, and with a consistent temperature. Over time, the wine may develop more nuanced tertiary aromas and flavors, offering an evolving tasting experience for those who choose to cellar it.
