Winery Background and History

Founded in 1974 by Giuseppe Castiglioni, Querciabella is a renowned winery located in Tuscany’s Chianti Classico region. The estate has been a pioneer in adopting organic practices since 1988 and biodynamic viticulture by 2000, emphasizing sustainability and environmental stewardship. This commitment has positioned Querciabella as a leader in producing wines that authentically express the unique terroir of their vineyards. Ardalico, first introduced in 2019, is the winery’s ‘junior’ Chianti Classico, crafted from younger Sangiovese vines and designed to offer an approachable and vibrant expression of the varietal.

Producer and Winemaker

Under the guidance of Sebastiano Cossia Castiglioni, Querciabella continues to uphold its philosophy of minimal intervention and respect for nature. The winemaking team focuses on creating wines that reflect the purity and character of the Sangiovese grape. Their approach combines meticulous vineyard management with precise vinification methods to ensure each bottle embodies the essence of its origin.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The Sangiovese grapes for Ardalico are sourced from high-altitude vineyards in the Chianti Classico region. These vineyards benefit from a favorable microclimate characterized by significant diurnal temperature variations, which contribute to the development of grapes with vibrant acidity and concentrated flavors. The diverse soil compositions across the estate’s vineyards impart complexity and depth to the wine.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Fermentation occurred in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, utilizing indigenous yeasts to preserve the grape’s natural character. The wine was then aged for a shorter period compared to the estate’s main Chianti Classico, with less exposure to oak, allowing for a fresher and more fruit-forward profile. This approach highlights the youthful vibrancy of the Sangiovese grape while maintaining the varietal’s elegance.

Tasting Notes

The 2020 Ardalico exhibits a bright ruby-red color. The nose is characterized by aromas of juicy cherry and pomegranate, with a twist of cranberry and subtle touches of cedar and spice. On the palate, it is vibrant and crunchy, featuring bright cherry and fresh herb flavors. The wine’s fine tannins and balanced acidity lead to a persistent and savory finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

Ardalico’s lively acidity and bright fruit profile make it an excellent companion to dishes featuring tomato-based sauces, such as pasta al pomodoro or Margherita pizza. Its versatility also allows it to pair well with roasted poultry, grilled vegetables, and a variety of Mediterranean-inspired dishes. The wine’s freshness complements the flavors of herbs like basil and oregano, enhancing the overall dining experience.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its aromatic profile and structure, serve the 2020 Ardalico at a temperature of 14–18°C (57–64°F). Decanting is not necessary for this youthful wine; however, allowing it to breathe for about 30 minutes before serving can help open up its bouquet. Use medium-sized, tulip-shaped wine glasses to concentrate the aromas and enhance the tasting experience.

Storage and Aging Potential

While the 2020 Ardalico is crafted for immediate enjoyment, it has the potential to age gracefully for up to three years when stored in optimal conditions—cool, dark, and with a consistent temperature. Over time, the wine may develop more nuanced tertiary aromas and flavors, offering an evolving tasting experience for those who choose to cellar it.
