Winery Background and History
Founded in 1974 by Giuseppe Castiglioni, Querciabella is a renowned winery located in Tuscany’s Chianti Classico region. The estate has been a pioneer in adopting organic practices since 1988 and biodynamic viticulture by 2000, emphasizing sustainability and environmental stewardship. This commitment has positioned Querciabella as a leader in producing wines that authentically express the unique terroir of their vineyards. Batàr, first produced in 1988, is the winery’s flagship white wine, showcasing their dedication to crafting exceptional white wines in a region predominantly known for reds.
Producer and Winemaker
Under the guidance of Sebastiano Cossia Castiglioni, Querciabella continues to uphold its philosophy of minimal intervention and respect for nature. The winemaking team focuses on creating wines that reflect the purity and character of the grape varieties. Their approach combines meticulous vineyard management with precise vinification methods to ensure each bottle embodies the essence of its origin.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The grapes for Batàr are sourced from vineyards located in Ruffoli, Greve in Chianti. The Chardonnay thrives in the Casaocci Sud and Il Pallonaio vineyards, characterized by galestro soils and south-facing exposures at elevations ranging from 350 to 600 meters above sea level. The Pinot Bianco is cultivated in sites such as Vigna del Dottore, La Lama, Il Bosco, La Collina, Vigna Chiara, and Vigna il Diavolo, each contributing to the wine’s complexity. The varying elevations and soil compositions create a unique microclimate that enhances the aromatic complexity and structural balance of the wines.
Vinification & Aging Methods
The 2002 Batàr is a blend of 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Bianco. Fermentation occurred in French oak barrels, utilizing indigenous yeasts to preserve the grape’s natural character. The wine was then aged for approximately nine months in French oak barriques, with a portion being new oak. This aging process imparts subtle oak influences while maintaining the varietal purity and elegance of the blend.
Tasting Notes
The 2002 Batàr presents a beautiful fragrance of honey, orange blossom, orange rind, and spice. On the palate, it offers a meltingly seductive texture with a savory finish. Despite the challenging vintage, this expression of almost pure Pinot Bianco is surprisingly distinctive and hauntingly elegant.
Food & Wine Pairing
Batàr’s rich texture and complex flavor profile make it an excellent companion to dishes such as roasted poultry, creamy risottos, and seafood like lobster or scallops. Its vibrant acidity and minerality also complement dishes featuring earthy flavors like mushrooms and truffles. The wine’s versatility allows it to pair well with a variety of cuisines, enhancing both the food and the wine.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its aromatic profile and structure, serve the 2002 Batàr at a temperature of 12–14°C (54–57°F). Decanting is not necessary, but allowing the wine to breathe for about 15–30 minutes before serving can help open up its complex bouquet. Use medium-sized, tulip-shaped wine glasses to concentrate the aromas and enhance the tasting experience.
Storage and Aging Potential
As of 2025, the 2002 Batàr has reached its peak drinking window. While it may still offer an enjoyable experience, it is advisable to consume any remaining bottles soon to enjoy the wine at its best. Proper storage in a cool, dark environment with a consistent temperature will help maintain its quality.
