Winery Background and History
Weingut Robert Weil was established in 1875 by Dr. Robert Weil in the village of Kiedrich, nestled within Germany’s Rheingau region. The estate has garnered international acclaim for its unwavering commitment to producing exceptional Riesling wines that authentically reflect the unique terroir of their vineyards. Over the years, Robert Weil has seamlessly blended modern winemaking techniques with time-honored traditions, focusing exclusively on Riesling cultivated in esteemed sites such as Kiedrich Gräfenberg and Kiedrich Turmberg. The winery manages approximately 90 hectares of vineyards, all dedicated to Riesling, and has been a proud member of the Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter (VDP) since 1907.
Producer and Winemaker
Currently, the estate is under the stewardship of Wilhelm Weil, the fourth generation of the founding family. Wilhelm’s leadership is marked by a steadfast dedication to quality and innovation. His meticulous approach to vineyard management and precise winemaking techniques have solidified Weingut Robert Weil’s reputation as a benchmark producer of premium Riesling wines in the Rheingau region. Wilhelm’s vision ensures that each bottle embodies the estate’s rich heritage and the distinctive characteristics of its vineyards.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The Kiedrich Gräfenberg vineyard is distinguished by its steep, southwest-facing slopes and close proximity to the Rhine River, creating an optimal microclimate for Riesling cultivation. The soil composition consists of deep to medium-deep stony, fragmented phyllite interspersed with loess and loam, contributing to the wine’s distinctive minerality and complexity. The combination of favorable sun exposure and well-draining soils allows for the production of Rieslings with remarkable depth, elegance, and aging potential.

Vinification & Aging Methods
The 2021 Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Auslese is crafted with an emphasis on purity and elegance. Grapes are meticulously hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with careful selection to ensure only the finest fruit is used. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks to preserve the wine’s vibrant fruit character and crisp acidity. Following fermentation, the wine matures in large, neutral oak casks, which enhance its texture and complexity without overshadowing the varietal’s inherent qualities.

Tasting Notes
The 2021 Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Auslese presents a captivating bouquet of dried and candied citrus fruits, complemented by mineral undertones that emerge with aeration. On the palate, it is lush and round, yet exhibits remarkable salinity and tension. This rich, piquant, and vital Auslese showcases concentrated, vivacious fruit flavors and spectacular salinity, leading to a long, elegant finish.
Food & Wine Pairing
The balanced sweetness and vibrant acidity of this Auslese make it a versatile companion to a variety of dishes. It pairs exceptionally well with spicy Asian cuisine, such as Thai or Sichuan dishes, where the wine’s sweetness complements the heat. Additionally, it harmonizes beautifully with rich pâtés, blue cheeses, and fruit-based desserts, enhancing the flavors and providing a refreshing contrast.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate the nuances of this Riesling Auslese, serve it well-chilled at a temperature between 8 to 10 degrees Celsius (46 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit). Using a white wine glass with a slightly tapered rim will help concentrate the aromas and enhance the tasting experience. Decanting is not necessary; simply uncork and pour to enjoy its vibrant character.
Storage and Aging Potential
While this Auslese is delightful in its youth, showcasing fresh fruit flavors and lively acidity, it also possesses remarkable aging potential. When stored in optimal conditions—cool, dark, and with a consistent temperature—it can evolve over the next 20 to 30 years, developing deeper complexity and nuanced tertiary flavors that further enhance its appeal.
