Winery Background and History

Weingut Robert Weil, established in 1875 by Dr. Robert Weil, is located in Kiedrich within Germany’s Rheingau wine region. The estate has earned a distinguished reputation for producing exceptional Riesling wines that reflect the unique terroir of their vineyards. Over the years, Robert Weil has seamlessly integrated modern winemaking techniques with traditional practices, focusing exclusively on Riesling cultivated in esteemed parcels like Kiedricher Gräfenberg, Kiedricher Turmberg, and Kiedricher Klosterberg. The estate is a member of the Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter (VDP) since 1907 and currently manages approximately 90 hectares of vineyards.

Producer and Winemaker

The winery is currently managed by Wilhelm Weil, representing the fourth generation of the founding family. Under his leadership, Weingut Robert Weil continues to uphold its commitment to quality and innovation. Wilhelm’s dedication to meticulous vineyard management and precise winemaking has solidified the winery’s status as a benchmark producer of premium Riesling wines in the Rheingau region.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The Kiedrich Klosterberg vineyard is classified as a VDP Erste Lage, indicating a premier cru status. Situated on steep, southwest-facing slopes, the vineyard’s soil is composed of rocks from the Devonian geological period (colored slate) and Pre-Devonian (phyllite and gneiss), interspersed with silty areas. This unique terroir contributes to the distinctive minerality and complexity of the wines produced from this site. The name “Klosterberg” (German for “monastery mountain”) originates from the ancient path, the “Klosterweg,” which crosses the vineyards and connects the old Cistercian abbey of Kloster Eberbach to the village of Kiedrich.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The 2022 Kiedrich Klosterberg Riesling Trocken is produced with a focus on purity and expression of terroir. Grapes are hand-harvested from the steep slopes of the Klosterberg vineyard. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks to preserve the wine’s vibrant fruit character and crisp acidity. Following fermentation, the wine undergoes maturation in large, neutral oak casks, which impart subtle texture without overshadowing the varietal’s inherent qualities.

Tasting Notes

The 2022 Kiedrich Klosterberg Riesling Trocken presents a bright straw-yellow hue. On the nose, it reveals fresh aromas of citrus, green apple, and delicate floral notes, enriched by a distinctive minerality. The palate is dry (trocken), featuring lively acidity that balances its fruity character, imparting freshness and vibrancy. Mineral undertones add complexity, leading to a persistent finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

The bright acidity and mineral complexity of this dry Riesling make it an excellent companion to a variety of dishes. It pairs particularly well with seafood such as grilled shrimp, seared scallops, and oysters. Additionally, it complements poultry dishes like roast chicken and turkey, as well as Asian cuisine, including sushi and lightly spiced Thai dishes. The wine’s versatility also allows it to enhance vegetarian dishes featuring fresh herbs and citrus-based sauces.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate the nuances of this Riesling, serve it chilled at a temperature between 8 to 10 degrees Celsius (46 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit). Using a white wine glass with a slightly tapered rim will help concentrate the aromas and enhance the tasting experience. Decanting is not necessary; simply uncork and pour to enjoy its vibrant character.

Storage and Aging Potential

While the 2022 Kiedrich Klosterberg Riesling Trocken is delightful in its youth, showcasing fresh fruit flavors and lively acidity, it also possesses remarkable aging potential. When stored in optimal conditions—cool, dark, and with a consistent temperature—it can evolve over the next 10 to 15 years, developing deeper complexity and nuanced tertiary flavors that further enhance its appeal.
