Vineyards and Microclimate

The Kiedrich Turmberg vineyard, wholly owned by Weingut Robert Weil, is rated as Erste Lage (“premier cru”) by the prestigious VDP growers association. Situated on a steep, southwest-facing slope with inclines of up to 60%, the vineyard’s soil consists of stony, fragmented phyllite interlaced with loess and loam. This unique terroir contributes to the distinctive minerality and complexity of the wines produced from this site.

The 2022 Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling Trocken is crafted with a focus on purity and elegance. Grapes are meticulously hand-harvested from the steep slopes of the Turmberg vineyard. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks to preserve the wine’s vibrant fruit character and crisp acidity. Following fermentation, the wine undergoes maturation in large, neutral oak casks, which impart a subtle texture without overshadowing the varietal’s inherent qualities.

On the palate, it is pure and fresh, yet also rich and intense, offering a full-bodied, very elegant, saline, and crystalline experience with a firm structure. The finish is very long, intense, saline, savory, and grippy, revealing remarkable purity and tension. 

Food & Wine Pairing

The bright acidity and mineral complexity of this dry Riesling make it an excellent companion to a variety of dishes. It pairs particularly well with seafood such as grilled shrimp, seared scallops, and oysters. Additionally, it complements poultry dishes like roast chicken and turkey, as well as Asian cuisine, including sushi and lightly spiced Thai dishes. The wine’s versatility also allows it to enhance vegetarian dishes featuring fresh herbs and citrus-based sauces.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate the nuances of this Riesling, serve it chilled at a temperature between 8 to 10 degrees Celsius (46 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit). Using a white wine glass with a slightly tapered rim will help concentrate the aromas and enhance the tasting experience. Decanting is not necessary; simply uncork and pour to enjoy its vibrant character.

Tasted as a sample, the 2022 Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling Trocken opens with a clear, intense, and concentrated, slightly smoky yet still discreet and elegant nose of white fruits and crushed, saline stones. Pure and fresh yet also rich and intense on the palate, this is a full-bodied, very elegant, saline, and crystalline Turmberg with a firm structure and a very long, intense, saline, savory, and grippy finish. The wine reveals remarkable purity and tension yet is still a little bitter on the tight and citric finish. Promising. 

• James Suckling: 96 points. Stunning racy brilliance and wet stone minerality are married to complex aromas of white peach, hibiscus, and a hint of mangosteen. So fine and precise, so light-footed and subtle for the impressive concentration. Mountain stream clarity at the super-long finish. 

• Vinous: 94 points. The palate is immediately framed in citrus freshness. Concentrated, slender, bright, taut, and straight-laced. There’s a lovely citrus finish. The 2022 is sophisticated, cool, and serene.
