Winery Background and History
Maison Trimbach, established in 1626 in Ribeauvillé, Alsace, has been a family-run winery for over 12 generations. Renowned for producing structured, long-lived, and elegant wines, Trimbach emphasizes the expression of terroir in its offerings. Their Gewurztraminer Vendanges Tardives exemplifies this commitment, showcasing the unique characteristics of late-harvested Gewurztraminer grapes from select Alsace vineyards.
Producer and Winemaker
The Trimbach family continues to oversee all aspects of production, with Pierre Trimbach leading as the chief winemaker. His nephew, Julien, assists in the winemaking process, ensuring the continuation of the family’s dedication to quality. Pierre’s brother, Jean, and Pierre’s daughter, Anne, serve as global brand ambassadors, promoting the Trimbach legacy worldwide.
Vineyards and Microclimate
Grapes for the Gewurztraminer Vendanges Tardives are sourced from Grand Cru Osterberg in Ribeauvillé and very old vines planted at the Muelforst site in Hunawihr. These well-drained vineyards, facing south, contain argilo-calcaire soils over a deep limestone base, excellent for growing Gewurztraminer. The combination of favorable microclimate and soil composition contributes to the wine’s complexity and depth.
Grape Varietals & Percentage Used
100% Gewurztraminer
Vinification & Aging Methods
The grapes are hand-harvested late in the season to achieve optimal ripeness and concentration. After gentle pressing in pneumatic presses, the juice undergoes fermentation in stainless steel tanks, with no malolactic fermentation to preserve natural fruit acidity. The wine is aged for several months before estate bottling, followed by additional bottle aging in the cellar to ensure readiness for release.
ABV (Alcohol by Volume)
Approximately 13%
Tasting Notes
The 2017 Trimbach Gewurztraminer Vendanges Tardives presents a medium gold hue with aromas of quince preserves, caramelized Mirabelle plums, and lychee. On the palate, it is sweet, succulent, and full-bodied, yet elegant, showcasing flavors of ripe apricot, soft citrus, and honey, lifted by ripe acidity and complemented by subtle spicy nuances. The finish is long and suave, leaving a lasting impression.
Food & Wine Pairing
This late-harvest Gewurztraminer pairs exceptionally well with foie gras, lobster in sauce, poultry, white meats, and dishes featuring truffles. Its sweetness and complexity also complement spicy and aromatic cuisines, such as Asian dishes, and desserts made with fresh fruits, like tarte tatin.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve chilled at 10-12°C (50-54°F) to fully appreciate its aromatic profile and structure. Using a white wine glass will help concentrate the aromas, providing an optimal tasting experience. Decanting is not necessary; however, allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after pouring can enhance its expressive bouquet.
Storage and Aging Potential
The 2017 Gewurztraminer Vendanges Tardives has significant aging potential, with an expected evolution over the next 15 years and beyond. Over time, it will develop additional complexity, showcasing the depth and longevity characteristic of top Alsace late-harvest wines. Proper storage in a cool, dark environment with stable temperatures will ensure its graceful maturation.
