Winery Background and History

The Serego Alighieri estate, established in 1353 by Pietro Alighieri, son of the poet Dante Alighieri, is one of the oldest winemaking estates in Valpolicella Classica, Veneto, Italy. Located in Gargagnago, the estate has been managed by 21 generations of the Alighieri family. In 1973, the estate partnered with Masi Agricola, combining centuries-old traditions with modern winemaking techniques to produce wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region.

Producer and Winemaker

Serego Alighieri wines are produced under the guidance of the Masi Technical Group, led by Raffaele Boscaini. This team of experts, including oenologists and agronomists, collaborates closely with the Alighieri family to ensure that each wine embodies the estate’s rich heritage and commitment to quality. Their approach emphasizes sustainable viticulture and the use of indigenous grape varieties to create wines that are both authentic and expressive.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The Vaio Armaron vineyard is situated in the heart of Valpolicella Classica, characterized by rolling hills, calcareous soils, and a temperate climate influenced by Lake Garda. These conditions provide optimal sun exposure and ventilation, promoting the cultivation of high-quality grapes. The unique microclimate contributes to the development of complex aromas and flavors in the wines, reflecting the distinctiveness of the region.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo meticulous sorting to ensure only the best fruit is used. The appassimento process involves drying the grapes for about 100 days to concentrate their sugars and flavors. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures, followed by aging in oak barrels. This process imparts depth and complexity, resulting in a wine that balances richness with structure.

Tasting Notes

The 2016 Vaio Armaron Amarone exhibits a deep ruby red color. The nose is intense and elegant, offering aromas of fruit preserved in spirit, dried plums, and cocoa. On the palate, it is well-structured and well-balanced, with silky tannins and a long finish revealing ripe cherries and sweet spices.

Food & Wine Pairing

This full-bodied red pairs well with rich dishes such as braised meats, roasted game, and aged cheeses. Its structure and complexity also make it a suitable companion for hearty pasta dishes and grilled vegetables. Additionally, it can be enjoyed on its own as a meditation wine.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its nuances, serve this wine at a temperature of 18°C (64°F). Decanting for about 30 minutes before serving can help open up its aromas and flavors. Using appropriate glassware, such as a large red wine glass, will further enhance the tasting experience.

Storage and Aging Potential

With proper storage in a cool, dark place, this wine has the potential to age gracefully for up to 25–30 years. Over time, it is expected to develop additional complexity, with the integration of its fruit, tannin, and oak components becoming more harmonious.
